  1. As soon as I get home I will post my photo's. As well as at the Party I took a few this morning when the bar was empty which will give a better overall view of the new Scooters at Secrets. As one would expect from the opening night it was very busy and everyone seemed to be having a good time.

  3. There were more than 20 last night with two more girls coming in during the evening looking for a job. The six that were drafted in from their other bars for the opening have apparently all asked to stay permanantly. These were taken this morning after the cleaners got to work. I will follow those with some I took last night. Last night to follow

  4. Well Scooters now have four bars running in Pattaya after opening a new venue so they must be doing something right and Secrets have no bars running in Pattaya due to the owner deciding to move on. Maybe it is time for some of the disciples of Secrets to take a leaf out of Bens book and move on.... it is no more in Patts.... and if you do want to go to Secrets Bar... go to his new one. cheers

  6. Got to be honest saying 'it's just another bar' is a bit odd, of course if the themed bar product doesn't appeal to you then that might be a reason for not going but bars open all the time but does that mean you will not go to any of them because they are new. Scooters has found a theme, a business idea that appears to be working hence the opening of yet another part of the brand. Plenty of people attend their other bars (so I am told) so I doubt it will fold soon. Of course if their offering, their business plan becomes stale then it may not last long but I think they have a good product and they will attract a good following. I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Scooters in LK Metro and I was taken care of very well by their excellent staff, I like the style of the place, the girls look great in their uniforms and I am sure I will visit. If I don't like it when there then of course I might not go back but I will give it a try as that experience will enable me to have an informed view rather than knocking a place without even stepping inside it.

  7. One of the main positives of this association is that Scooters bring with them a proactive managerial "team". As well as Anthony, an experienced and very enthusiastic Bar Manager who will do the recruiting, they have there own promotional manager who also maintains the music video's and takes promotional video's and photographs. They are all hands on and the Bar is in their very capable hands. Keep an open mind EDITED BY LANZALAD

  11. Knowledge is king me thinks. I try to do as much research as possible. Especially when travelling to new places. Yes there is lots of shite written but usually you can sieve through it to get a good idea of what's true. I think that is where forums like this come into their own. So many guys with experience of travel all over the world and willing to help. Happy days!

  12. Simple answer is yes. If I am going to a destination that has loads of tourist sites of course I am going to research all about it otherwise I could easily get ripped off by a 'friendly local' telling you the best places to go which could be the last places I would want to be at. I also don't want to miss anything which probably was the reason for going there in the first place. I look at Google, I look at National Tourist sites (the Hong Kong one for example is particularly good), I look at reviews, Trip Advisor and I buy a decent book such as the Eye Witness books which cover a lot of interesting snippets of local detours not often mentioned in other tourist books. I have found some gems off the beaten track by reading those books. Cities such as Prague, Budapest, Rome and St Petersburg are so much more interesting if you invest a bit of time in understanding what is on offer, the prices of entry, any deals, any promos which can assist in planning. Publications on line that offer 'what to do in xxxx' etc are usually written by locals and have up to date info on what is happening in town, what shows are on, what events are on (some to avoid). I will also say when you have little ones pre-planning can save you oodles of bucks when needing to go to family styled locations. The more information I have about a place the more I can avoid pitfalls of just turning up and having to flip a coin. Just as an example, I went to Phi Phi last year, online there were loads of sites offering the boat trip at quite extortionate prices yet I also read some local info from travelers that suggested the best deals were from the boat ticket sellers on the front at Ao Nang and they could save you a bucket load of pounds. They were right, even negotiated downwards and got a great deal including pick up and delivery back to hotel, was a great day at less than a third of what was advertised online for pre sale. Sorry but this idea of just arriving and talking to a local doesn't do it for me, probably leave the place missing all the good sites, I didn't pay to arrive somewhere and not get a good deal for my money. I am sure arriving in Pattaya for the first time at Songkran and getting slapped with powder on your face before being soaked is not on everyone's list of things to do, a little pre planning might help. Of course a lot of experiences can put you in good stead for the next trip.

  14. Twenty two days less the Election when all the workers said they were going home to vote and one day when the electricity was down from 9 - 5 pm. No major structural alterations but changes included a new floor, toilets, tables, bar seating, music video's, lighting, external sitting area and "canopy" and a multitude of interior fixtures and fittings and complete redecoration. Steve, the guy in charge of the building team, treated each set back ( and there were several) as a personal challenge to be overcome which he did on every occasion. The final one was 6 hours before the official start of the Party when it was discovered that 4 of the TV's had been fried when the outside electrical transformer box blew up about 3 weeks ago. Scooters had 3 TV's in storage which were speedingly repatriated. Unfortunately the two TV's over the Bar were the ones not working on the night although I think that will be remedied within a day or two. The music played at a level that did not interupt conversation and coped well.

  15. No ... I just get on the plane ( I don't even look for airline deals ) and get to where I am going ... nothing better than talking with the locals ( if we can understand each other ) to find out the "scoop" .. where to go .. hang-out .. and keep talking to the locals to find your way to whatever you need or want .. you would be surprised where you end up at times .. lol

  17. I mean, from searching flights, to where to go, what to do, what hotels, what time of year, prices etc etc? Or can you not be arsed, you leave it to the missus/mate/travel agent/same places you know and trust etc? I enjoy it, I like looking at the reviews, trying to work out what's best, looking at what I can do, when is best for our needs, dates, working it all out, best VFM prices I can get etc.

  27. Well, thats a managers job. Nothing special about it. That is what I was paid for all my life, and in a more shitty environment. And I guess I am not the only one. Besides that, yes the place looks OK.

  29. Not as many as there used to be. One of the advantages of taking snaps with my OPPO phone is that all I have to worry about is pointing it in the right direction and making sure it is set on "Photo". My wife always says "It is all in the composition." "What?"

  30. I enjoy a little planning but increasingly see the sense in finding out chatting to the locals and finding out where's good to go- totally agree with you on this. On my last 2 trips in Nov and Jan this really paid dividends. So many of the reviews on TripAdvisor ,et.al and promotion on social media in no way match the reality. Much better finding out on the ground.

  31. Just took a good yonder round town. Can't believe how quiet it is. It's only four in the afternoon but still very quiet, virtually nobody in the bars on buakhao, lengkee, soi 7 etc. Currently sat in the retox on lengkee having grub and I'm one of customers in the gaff.

  32. Yea .. for example ( research before traveling ) all the pictures you see about these beautiful destinations ... jeez most of the time the pictures don't match the reality of the place .. for example .. take a look at pictures of the floating market in BKK - I have never seen the floating market look like any of the pictures advertising the place .... Many other examples as well ... that is why I don't waste my time with any pre-trip planning ... and knowing me if I do any pre-trip planning it all goes to hell in a hand basket anyway .. I am to spontaneous for planning ...

  33. In fact my travels were mainly dictated by my job, so never really had to plan. The only ones I planned were the holidays back home. And once on the spot just trust your instinct, and it works out pretty well usually. Do you think I did months of research before deciding to move to Bali ? Have a look at the first page of my Indo thread.... I mean, remember when we travelled before internet, forums, F.B. and all that stuff ?

  38. Yes I enjoy it , but I do get travel agents involved when going somewhere new , like Myanmar and Vietnam , just to make my life easier, but I set out want I want to do from my research and the things that are most important to me , then let them come up with an itinerary / but otherwise I use forums like this for ideas , instagram, FB , television etc I mostly use Kayak for flights and Booking.com / Trivago for hotels - I have used viator to book day trips when I had limited time in a destination - trip advisor for hotel and restaurant reviews ( although I take those with an extremely large pinch of salt .. )

  44. OK, a little update on the wedding preparations ! Remember that I am in Bali now, so all the info and pics are the “daily reports” the Miss send me by W.A. Since 2 weeks there is obviously a non-stop activity at home, friends and family being over to help and start to prepare some food stuff. Not a bad thing that I am not there, I know the feeling… A bit like living at the public market ! To give you an idea of quantities : 400 + food gift boxes 900 coconuts 750 kg rice 120 Kgs eggs 20 Kg red sugar (and way more “normal” sugar) 50 packs of cigarettes (remember EVERY male smokes in Indonesia) Bananas, meat etc is still to come A few pics, sorry for the quality ! I put a few vids also, as I think it gives a more lively image than pics. I haven't resized anything as it all came through W.A. and therefore is resized already I think. Sorry if it turns out a bit messy ….. Some backfilling been done at the area where the marquee will be set up. Trying to level and smoothen the surface. Most cooking is still done the old way on wood fire stoves. Small stoves can be bought everywhere : For the bigger ones they are "build on demand" : Note the stock of wood, unlikely we'll run out ! The food gift boxes (later to be distributed to all neighbours, relatives, and friends in / around the village) have been received and “assembled” : Then there are gift bags to be distributed to everybody who has helped in the preparation. They contain useful items like soap, washing powder. A few videos of the teams at work : VID-20190321-WA0011.mp4 VID-20190324-WA0004.mp4 VID-20190325-WA0006.mp4 Dont ask me budget wise where we stand, you know the answer already …….. I am to the jungle next Saturday, more pics to come ! Cheers
