  1. Politics aren't really discussed on most threads ( a little -- but, not much IMHO ) .. we ALL tend to give each other a break .. which I think is good .. because if so -- believe me, it would get nasty ! Anyway, I think politics and religion is a personal thing ... just try to keep quiet and try to go with the flow

  3. Could be a return to the good old days of 'take care'. With girls desperate to hang on to customers. Not the mercenaries they have become.

  4. Another day by the ocean. I think I might stay here for one more month. Still gotta work from home come this autumn, but I can work from here just as well if I decide to come back again. I think my father and brother decided to stay out and do a bit of night fishing.

  5. A big thank you to everyone who came to the bar in July. The numbers are in. I’m not planning on early retirement just yet, but not bad at all. A combination of prudence, smart business and hard work meant I made a half decent profit, even after dropping my prices and only being open till midnight. This month may be harder. Many regulars are returning home and most of the decent sport (Champions League) is at a bad time for customers. We are open till 2:00am every night now. I had to let three girls go so I could get some new ladies in. That’s not an easy thing to do, but the lineup is a lot fresher and I’m happy with things, even though we have lost familiar faces. I made sure the staff were properly compensated. I’ve always said it’s not a popularity contest. I’m no David Brent. So many people asking me when the borders will be open and the answer is a straight “I don’t know”! My heart is with all the bar regulars who can’t make it at the moment. The bar is doing ok but it’s shit without all your faces. Yes, I miss the money, but I like talking to people, hearing your stories, it seems so unfair. I remember seeing a Leeds meetup on here last year with so many regulars and I wasn’t there. That’s how it feels. Anyway, baggies in the Premier League, Arsenal FA cup winners, that will please a former boss. Here’s to August. Phil

  6. I was hardly gasping for breath on Friday and last night when I had the two busiest nights since I opened. Many bars I know are doing well. Every bar owner I have talked to is making a profit.

  7. I watched a program on TV where they showed the Heinz factory somewhere in the UK where the baked beans are canned. Judging by the amount of baked beans I see in this thread being consumed, I think that I better buy shares in Heinz ☺️

  12. Nah, I thought I would add a bit of humour in to an otherwise depressing thread which is dominated by people who are pushing the boundaries of their beliefs from the basements of their dwellings.

  18. Spot on. With what is happening in vietnam, along with the jitters the UK are getting about a second wave, Thailand will remain closed to visitors at least until next year at an estimate.

  22. I was watching the boxing last night, and at the end Johnny Nelson, a black guy, ex World Champ, whom was brought up in an era where racism was ubiquitous was talking asked about this. He made a good point in talking about this IMO, what he said was two words could or could've made a big difference. Instead of 'Black Lives Matter', if it had said 'Black Lives Matter As Well', it would have been, and received better. Sure for some, wouldn't matter what it was called, they would still deny there's racism or would just disagree with it anyway. But i thought fair play to him to acknowledge that.

  27. Sounds like the Chinese sent out superspreaders to the majority of the western world, the superpowers and bothersome Europeans. At the same time they sent out uninfected Chinese to countries friendly or not seen as a threat so as to mask their ingenious plan for world domination. Those countries inexplicably have low rates of infection. Of course the world, even though not happy with China, would need their products and help. For years China has been buying up swathes of land for livestock, they have been buying up Africa, they have invested in all continents and have ownership of 95 percent of all the world's rare earth metals. Sounds like a good plan for world denomination and moving the world order at a faster pace than would otherwise been possible. Of course this is just another conspiracy theory lol.

  28. Was reading yesterday that the UK infection rate had increased 50% last week over the week before, and it was mainly young people who are more likely to ignore social distancing.

  29. An elderly man went into the confession box and said to the priest, “Father I’m 80 years old, married, with four kids and last night I had a wild threesome with two hot 18-year-olds.” “My son, when was the last time you were in confession?” asked the priest. “Never, father, I’m Jewish,” came the reply. “Why are you telling me, then?” asked the priest. “I’m telling everybody!” said the old bloke.

  33. Opening night at MiT looks like a financial disaster for the bars, with the exception of the popular Danny sports bar. Did MiT bars really expect to attract the few residents still in town? It's a zero-sum game, a limited amount of customers and an ever expanding number of competing bars so it's clearly survival of the fittest, and the fittest aren't the ones in the photos above. Treetown dead, New Plaza dead, Made in Thailand dead, the Thirteens dead, Soi 7 dead, Soi 8 dead, Walking Street asleep or gasping for breath, Soi 6 floundering. How long will these bars keep the lights on when nobody is dropping in? Got to be wholesale closures soon.

  39. Now this is interesting. I think somebody posted a link earlier to an NYT article pondering why SE Asia has escaped so lightly. Apart from the usual suggestions that it was culturally-normal behaviour to social distance, and the face mask wearing culture that already existed here, the article also wondered whether there might be something genetic at work that gave SE Asians a degree of protection against the virus? This theme was taken up a few days later by a spokesman for the CCSA when he noted that SE Asians are significantly more prone to getting dengue fever than foreigners, so it's possible that they're less prone to getting C19, but he didn't know why. Then I stumbled across this in last week's Economist. It's basically some interesting stuff about bat populations in SE Asia, but the really good bit that begins to answer the "why" starts in the paragraph beginning with "Jeremy Farrar" between the two pictures. Maybe the NYT writer and the CCSA guy had heard about this, but it does indeed seem possible that the people in SE Asia (or at least parts of it) do possess a natural resistance to coronaviruses like SARS-COV-2, and thus to Covid-19.

  40. What's wrong with this choice? - Their authoritarian governments are able to quickly impose draconian restrictions on people, which liberal democracies find themselves unable to do. The original SARS epidemic instilled a deep fear of unknown illnesses in people in east and south-east Asia and they quickly adopted a mask-wearing culture, even in normal times as air pollution is so bad in many cities. Thus the order to wear masks in public didn't cause the "give-me-freedom-or-give-me-death" nonsense that is still going on in the West (while the virus enjoys itself to the full). Your three choices above just look like sour grapes (quite appropriate for a Frenchman, lol), and you sound jealous or resentful that a country where you evidently had a miserable time living, at least to judge by how much you seem to hate it from all your comments on this board, has done so well in dealing with the virus, certainly compared with your home country in Europe or the one in which you currently reside.
