Koh Samui

Recommended Posts

I'm after some advice on this beautiful part of Thailand as I'd like to visit with family in August.

What I'm specifically after is a recommendations of which areas are best to stay in initially and then will move onto 'things to do'. So, in the first instance can I ask for recommendations of a decent area to stay in with access to all local amenities......thanks in advance

I recommend staying in Chaweng or Lamai, or right in between the two towns at Crystal Bay where we stayed in December.

Lamai is my favourite, nicer beach and far less built up than Chaweng

Thinking of taking the family to Samui next trip as well, so interested in the thread.

It seems to that for the last 8 years we travel to Thailand on average 3 times every 2 years with the summer holiday being the constant and then either Christmas or Easter being the other trip. We always visit Udon Thani as we she have a house there plus look for a beach trip and a night in BKK on the return to England. I'm always on the look for new places to visit having spent the last 4 years mainly in Hua Hin and Krabi/Ao Nang and also a few days here and there in Patts.

Weve visited other parts of Thailand , and am keen to travel around a bit more on each visit and Koh Samui is my next choice, so welcome any other members feedback

I'd say Lamai and avoid Chaweng apart from maybe a day trip to look round the shops. The last time I stayed in Chaweng a couple of years ago it had deteriorated a lot in terms of atmosphere, quality of tourist and general fun. At night, especially around the well known bar/entertainment area it at times felt very edgy and uncomfortable, probably the most I've ever felt that in Thailand. Lamai beach is also a lot better.

Ko Samui as wifey and I stayed there holidays/NYE 2018. Granted we stayed at "Anantara" resort, quite nice, but quite pricey too, especially holidays. Novotel there is a bit more reasonably priced and close to the action.

I like Chaweng, but can see why others liked Lamai, lot's to do here and some reasonable places/hotels to stay.

Hope these pics help and give you a feel for what is offered.

I've never had that feeling in Chaweng?

To me the bars and nightclubs have a very relaxed vibe without the many roid heads you see in Pattaya these days.

There's a seedy underbelly make no mistake, and you don't want to get into trouble on an island like Samui as the cops are as bent as they come.

As for Lamai, it's fun but small in terms of nightlife compared to Chaweng. Did see some cracking girls in the girly bars though.

And that's just Chaweng.

Far more places to go and see. Just rent a bike and explore the Island's many beaches.

I mentioned Crystal bay before I think, but Lamai beach and Lipa Noi beach are also very nice, as is Thongson Bay.

Just avoid rainy season!

I concur, nothing wrong with Chaweng at all, loved the place and felt very comfortable with a 3 year old in tow.

Lamai is more relaxed but again good atmosphere for anybody but a roidy.

Koh Samui is a great place to visit, I will return.

Would like to go sometime but always get put off by the flight prices when I compare it to the cheap fares to Phuket. Something about paying £200+ for an internal flight in Thailand grates on me......
