Just seen this on Pattaya one news but I guess we all know already...

Nearly one-third of tourism-related businesses ‘may shut down permanently’

About one-third of tourism business operators in Thailand will run out of liquidity to keep their businesses afloat in the second half of 2020, Tourism Council of Thailand president Chairat Trirattanajarasporn has warned.

“The impact of Covid-19 will become most serious in the third quarter this year after many operators had tried to cut costs by letting some of their employees go, but after more than a million positions cut the situation still hasn’t improved, as no foreign tourists are allowed into the country yet,” he said.

“The council estimates that in the next three months up to 30 per cent of tourism-related businesses in Thailand are at risk of shutting down permanently.”

Chairat added that some operators are starting to sell their establishments, such as hotels, resorts, restaurants and gift shops to investors who wish to turn them into other business. “However, since the real estate business is also affected by the economic crisis, the hope of selling their properties is still bleak for these owners,” he added.

“The council had a meeting with Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha on Friday (July 10) and proposed five measures to help tourism business operators,” said Chairat. “These measures are: providing soft loans to tourism entrepreneurs; considering moving the schedule up to open the country to foreign tourists under a practice similar to the travel bubble scheme; offering discount on electricity bills, one of the main costs of hotel operators; having the Social Security Office extend the compensation payment to temporarily unemployed staff from June to December, and reducing the employer’s contribution to Social Security Fund from 4 percent to 1 percent.”

Chairat also added that the Tourism Council of Thailand has predicted the income from foreign tourists in 2020 will drop significantly from Bt2.2 trillion last year to only around Bt600 billion.

If social media and the news is anything to go by, the situation on Koh Chang, Koh samui and Phuket is much worse than in Pattaya.

Yes my friends son is married to a Thai wife and they run a little business just something to keep them going and will never make loads of money but they have a good return and quality of life and they are both back here now in the UK with the business in Koh Chang wrapped up for the foreseeable future.

He is back on his tools and she is working in a restaurant and they don't know what the future holds for there business on Koh Chang.

My mate who lives on Samui said its still an absolute ghost town and locals are very concerned about the future. Don't forget there's a huge group of Burmese immigrants that were working in the bars and restaurants who are now stranded without income or support from the government.

That's just awful. Surely it's just not tenable, nowhere near enough domestic tourists to last 12 months without foreigners, I understand their reluctance to let tourists in en masse but they need to find a way of accommodating some tourists from low risk countries.

Couple of mates went to ko chang at the weekend with their girlfriends. The 4 of them where the only people staying in the hotel.  They said the place is deserted, only seen a handful of Thai families in restaurants at night.

Thai people only get an average of 2 weeks holiday off a year (granted they get a shit tonne of Public hols), a lot of thais work 6 days a week, the average wage is probably about 30k baht per month. I don't see how it's possible for domestic tourism to sustain the sheer amount of tourist resorts in Thailand.

I think every one living in Pattaya failed math in school....

Hey I like things open but except for the super stars like Pin-up and Windmill the pie grows ever more tiny after each new opening........The warm body stool sitter math can in no way support all of these openings.........No friggin way......100% no friggin way....money down the toilet.....

Look at the farang in the bars......Do they look like party animals tearing up the town?.......Well most would have been party animals about the time of the Vietnam war....lol

correct except for the average wage matey, thats way off.  as an example, precovid,   with a degree working for the govt was 15K, teachers way less.   factories are around 9-10K basic plus shit loads o5f overtime can go up to 15.  discoun the rich kids and you are looking at a lot lot less than you think.

I thought so, I was being generous, no way can your average Thai afford to spend 2 weeks in a resort on Koh Chang.

A lot of thais are happy getting to jomtien beach for the day, they enjoy some seafood, a few Leo's and that's as much of a holiday as some of them get.

And if they stay longer than a day many just sleep in the back of their car.

Yeah, these bubbles have been proposed by the tourist officials, but are then knocked back by the Govt. It's complete uncertainty at the moment, not just in thailand but around the world.

You think Samui might lower their prices then, in travel to there amongst other things?

Oh yea, forgot, TIT, prices will go up 🙄

I don't know mate, I've seen some great deals on hotels etc, and judging by social media, there's some great deals in the bars and restaurants that are open.

Nickys on soi buakhao have introduced a 99b daily specials menu. For those folk in Thailand, there's probably never been a better time to be there.

It's one place I've never been mate so haven't a scooby. Even if they were to reduce their prices, there's no tourists around to take up the offer, the amount of expats and Thai domestic tourists just isn't enough to sustain the many tourist resorts throughout the country. It must be demoralising for tourist business owners with no sign of light at the end of the tunnel, and absolutely no financial support from the government.

It's a wee bit unique, there's a 'monopoly' on the island, shall we say.

Anyways, thread's about gogo's etc in Pattaya, i'll leave it there.
