Pattaya Beach Nourishment

Excellent pics, Mr Bewithyou. Thanks for posting.

The "engineer" I spoke to who was putting in the drainage channels did say they were only intended for "small rain".... I guess this was bigger rain than those channels could cope with!

Just need some new sand now to fill in the rivers....

We had our first significant rainfall this afternoon since the completion of the beach nourishment project. Got out and snapped a few pics after the rain let up as I was curious to see how the beach weathered the storm. Verdict is, not very well.

Starting at the north end.

Beach vendors were busy cleaning up the footpath as soon as the rain stopped.

As expected, the drain channels they installed were completely ineffective.

Probably not the best day to be working on the electric control panel.

Stage and seating at the Klang intersection.

Bit pissed off they completely blocked the footpath all the way to the edge of the road.

Another great Thai idea. Put up a shrine that completely blocks the rain runoff channel.

The Hilton waterfall is back, although much smaller than the 2013 version.

The volume of water in this pic is about the limit of what the rain channels can handle.

Less than a month since construction, and with the first storm cracks are already appearing.

I give it one or two more storms before the whole concrete pad is undercut and washed out. This is the runoff pad across from Soi 13/1.

40554516743_dd1a78779a_b.jpg

I see the short sections of concrete walls are doing their job to help keep the palm trees from getting washed out to sea.

I wonder if these large flapper valves are still operational.

At least the pumps are working.

Southend has the makings of a new Hilton waterfall.

Jeez ... seems to me .. what a waste of labor and serious money ...

Some snaps from this afternoon on the progress of the repairs.

North end, doesn't look like they've done anything.

Across from Soi 3, repairs done. Have to say, the footpath has held up well so far.
40568139063_997e205403_b.jpg

Soi 6 pumps are back, only two days late.
47481409712_30717f30f7_b.jpg

Soi 6, repairs underway.

32591730957_3c9ab02b51_b.jpg

Big pow wow underway too. Wonder what creative BS they'll come up with to explain why part of their multi-million baht project got washed away with the first significant rainfall.
40568139783_e8fb58674b_b.jpg

Across from Soi 12, concrete pad is in worse shape than what I noticed two days ago across from Soi 13/1.

Across from Soi 13/1, shadow is hiding it, but there is separation the length of the retaining wall seaside.

As well as on the footpath side.

Until the Thais bite the bullett and employ top consultants and engineers from Australia or Europe to rectify this situation we'll be all sadly reading this for the next 25 years

The real beach flooding problems started after the 2013 beach road remodel.....Not only did they cut down most of the trees they made the new promenade as flat as a pancake....Perfect for flooding the beach.....The promenade before 2013 was actually smartly designed to help control the flooding... Plus all the many trees that were on the beach helped stop the beach erosion...

But honestly I cant help but laugh that with-in weeks of finishing the beach it has a major wash out.....It was guaranteed to happen in time I just did not think it would happen so soon.....Talk about egg on your face...

This is just bodge up with concrete on top of concrete with the water washing away the underneath.

No steel was used no proper foundations.

It no surprise its a complete mess.

Thai's will not spend the correct amount of money to fix the problem in the first place.

This project was in the planning stage over 10 years ago....If you started from the first time plans were drawn up and started adding up the baht till now you would be some where between 1 and 2 billion baht maybe more.....The old mayor dumped at least 500,000,000 baht just on those worthless storm drains that dont work....Then there was the promenade redo....And about 3 failed attempts to improve the beach...Then there was the HUGE sand dredge boat that sat out in the bay for over a year.....And dont forget all kick backs...Hell it might even be closer to 3 billion....

According to the TV reports they are busy blaming mother nature.

Needless to say there is a lot of comment about that.

Walked along there today and I stress, beach still looks good. It’s always gonna get battered in a tropical storm.

Come on, there are tropical storms all over the region. VN, Philippines, etc... the beaches dont wash away.

Take Southern Thailand, have a look at the beaches and the color of the water.

Sure, but it’s looking a lot better than it did after storms before the refurb. Glass half full.

I was thinking exactly the same although I was also just thinking top consultants from anywhere but Thailand.

Correct. They should Google "artificial beach creation".

Because that is exactly what it is.

But before that they have to sort the drainage problem, other while there is no point.

Damage coming from the sea, not from behind.....

BTW, they better install some breakers before them buildings top over in the water....

Meanwhile some brainstorming was done...

From Pattaya mail. For some reason I cant copy the link ?

"Suggestions offered were returning to using ugly sandbags or lay rubber sheets over the sand to allow the water to return to the ocean without damaging the beach."

I went to that exact spot many, many years ago during a storm and it never looked like that.

Maybe my memory is failing me, but I seem to remember that the beach was much wider, probably around 50 metres or so. 🤔
