When I go too LOS I know I don’t have health insurance but I can afford to pay and that’s the difference.

Why did this guy feel the need to go back to Thailand and risk his health and his savings, (which didn’t seem to amount to much) when he could have just gone for a month a year, or have I miss read the post.

£50k, I think he’s getting off cheap, when you see some hospitals asking for £100K+ and looking at that Gofundme page, he’s must be wracking up medical bills faster than donations are coming in.

If he has property in Thailand, sell it and get back to Milton Keynes.

People never learn  ☹️

So true...

He owns a house on the dark side worth 2,400,000 baht and he sold up in the UK and I'm sure him and his Thai family are living on his UK pension.

Now if he is up on his feet i'd walk out of the hospital and be an out patient.

I have seen somewhere he is mobile and up on his feet and walking out of the hospital will cut the bills and stop it from clocking up so much.

Prolly for the same reasons the majority of old men go to Thailand........

You maybe, not me.👌

He was married and 80, so I very much doubt he was going for the go go girls.

Yes, if possible, get out of the hospital and get a good doctor to keep an eye on him as out patient.

As most, if not all his savings are gone, he needs to protect their home from hospital bills.

Never ever let them take you to a private hospital, use a Government one. When my Wife arrived at Bangkok Pattaya with a bust arm they told Her '350,000 Baht to fix it' lucky She was still conscious and Her condition was not life threatening, She told the ambulance to take her to Banglamung. Private room, operation, drugs, 24 hour nursing care, total bill 32000 Baht, which our insurance covered anyway. 2 years later Her arm is fine, not an ache or pain and held together with steel plates and pins.

It is not just the fact that the "Private" hospitals are more expensive it is the fact that there are numerous examples of them wishing to carry out expensive treatment that is not in fact required.

In my own case, BPH wanted to operate on my right knee basically to replace the knee at a cost of 450K.  I was recommended to get a second opinion from Bumrungrad Hospital in Bangkok. Made an appointment with the Specialist at Bumrungrad who first took an xray of the knee. He then informed me that at some stage I might need a knee replacement but that could be 10 years or more in the future and stated that currently I needed no operational treatment. He told me to simply carry on taking ibuprophin and it should settle down which it did.

Thailand in my opinion is not the place to be when we're elderly. Despite having had cancer at 42 its not reoccured touch wood and as such my annual insurance is very cheap (after 10 years its no longer reflected in premiums) around £48 for unlimited trips but individually maximum 60 days.

But the day I suffer from a stroke or heart attack etc will be the last day I go to Thailand because I wouldnt want to potentially put burden on my children in the future. I know the coverage will be good for first incident (if actually in Thailand) but I wouldnt trust coverage subsequently

If you've just suffered from trauma, stroke, heart attack the last thing on your mind will be the destination

Bingo, i know a Swedish guy whose just had a heart op (stents) done in the local government hospital here at a fraction of the private hospital cost.

I had health insurance and the policy stipulated that they would never cancel me because of age. The problem was that nothing was said about pricing me out, which they did when I turned age 65. Since I have a nest egg that can pay more than the limits of that policy, I canceled it.

I had a stroke a couple years ago. My wife took me to the provincial government hospital. I had an MRI and so many different tests that I had no idea what they were all for. When they gave me a chest X-ray, I was afraid they were just running up my bill. I told my wife to prepare to go to the bank. After three days I was released.  We went to the pharmacy and then to the cashiers office. My total bill including a bag full of drugs came to about 7,000 baht.

I should add that I wanted a private room but they were all full so I ended up in the stroke ward. Not pleasant but my wife was there with me most of the time so it wasn't too bad. She made sure that I didn't go hungry. The hospital food was pretty bad. After all these years I am still not a big rice fan.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with the standard of care/cost of services in government hospitals Gary, their problem is overcrowding as i see it. But of course the Junta is too concerned with buying submarines and tanks to concern themselves with building new hospitals for the people.
