There's absolutely nothing wrong with the standard of care/cost of services in government hospitals Gary, their problem is overcrowding as i see it. But of course the Junta is too concerned with buying submarines and tanks to concern themselves with building new hospitals for the people.

so like US

Might come as a surprise but some of us that not anywhere near retirement age still need to work to pay the bills.

Moan, moan, moan. 🤣

I wouldn’t know anything about work. I retired at 47 years of age, so have all the time in the world to enjoy a nice glass of wine and not having to watch the clock. 👌

I would have liked to retire at age 47 but I knew I'd eventually run out of money and Thailand is not the place to retire on a tight budget. I was able to retire at age 59 and although I'm certainly not wealthy, I don't have to live on a budget.

Just trying to imagine a Thai toursist in the UK with basic Thai travel insurance. Should the worst scenario occur, God forbid, would the UK hospital bills be similar to what we would have to pay in los?

Or are we being overcharged?

Just asking.

Bingo, i know a Swedish guy whose just had a heart op (stents) done in the local government hospital here at a fraction of the private hospital cost.

So did Graham Briar if I can recall (Graham and Pie YouTube) and look what happened to that poor bugger. Dead at 51 I think.

The ambulances get paid more for dropping you off at a private hospital. They will never take you to a Government hospital.

I never knew about them and their channel until now. Really sad, he looked fairly fit as well. Said smoking was the culprit

There is a subtle difference, the Swedish guy i'm referring to is still alive and well.

Which is why I have taken what steps I can in advance to get me taken to Sattahip (Queen Sirrikit)  as opposed to Pattaya as in Bangsaray I am about the same distance from each. Queen Sirrikit may be a large rambling Government Hospital but it shares the same specialists as with the non-government hospitals in Pattaya and seems to put patient care first where it should be in all Hospitals.

I loved the comment from the Queen Sirrikit triage nurse when I asked if there was an alternative specialist available replied  " Yes....................but him no good! " 🙂

I decided to wait a week for the good one.

I had a friend who fell off a ladder and shattered his elbow. Of course he had very little money and was taken to a government hospital. His elbow as mentioned was shattered and not just broken. The local doctors  did not have the expertise to even try to put it back together. They were planning to amputate his arm. Fortunately a skilled bone doctor. whatever you call them, was there on rotation. His elbow was a mess but this doctor gave it a shot. His arm was saved but was pretty ugly when healed and he never regained full use but he still had his arm for which he was very grateful. Maybe he was just lucky that doctor was there?

With a 1 in 5 chance it wasn’t?

I remember reading somewhere that all Thai doctors that work in private hospitals have to work 1 day per week in a government hospital.

Incidentally Thailand is ranked 6th in the world for the quality of its healthcare. Whatever way it works, it seems to be working well.

The Doctor that replaced my hips At the Government hospital in Sri Ratcha told me he has to work there in doing so it repays his educational costs he acquired going to Med school here . He has to go in daily to check on his patients. He also told me if I was not insured from working and had to pay out of pocket at a private hospital he would most likely have been the one doing the replacment as well. Never met a nicer Thai person than that doctor.

Yes that rings a bell. I remember reading that they were going to make doctors serve 1 or 2 years in their home province upon completion of their training. I don't know whether that happened or not. He clearly done a good job on your hips, your boyfriend told me the sex has been wild.

I am now stuck here in Mae Sot not able to return to Bangsaray until they lift the restrictions on travel. The only way out of Mae Sot to travel south takes you to a permanant police/army checkpoint 10 minutes drive away. That is the first of four between Mae Sot and Bangkok.

There is a huge Government hospital here but I have no idea what it is like other than the fact that our one and only Covid patient ( Paki visitor from Pattaya! 🙂) is still in residency with his girlfriend in isolation. Sai's Mother has diabetes and seems to have been well looked after as an out patient.

Another 12 days before I try to do my 90 days online. Total mixed messages as to whether it will work or not.

ps: Sai just informed me that the guy has been released from hospital having recovered. His "girlfriend" is out of isolation having not contracted Covid. Apparently, she was some Thai guy in Mae Sot's official "girlfiend" and is now being given the "sent to Coventry" cold shoulder by friends and relations. 🤣
