Or how to go for the quick money and destroy a whole city.....

Anyway, remember Belt and Road project. Laos and Cambodia are on the target list and both already well on the way of being owned by China.

Whenever I've been to my bank in Pattaya in recent months, it seems to be full of Chinese wanting to open accounts.

Chinese domination of the town could happen in Patts as well.

Think it's the Casinos that are the real big draw for the Chinese , as long as gambling  remains illegal in Thailand , can't see that happening

The Chinese are trying to get access to the Cambodian naval base at Ream, just down the coast from Snooky, which is worrying the Americans.

Anywhere in Asia, the Chinese will win. Whatever the US thinks.

Same as in Africa.

For some reason I doubt the Chinese will win in Vietnam. OK, the USA will loose, but that is something different again 😉

Ok, its a bit of a generalization, they wont win in Japan either !

But plenty Chinese factories being set.up in VN since years because of the lower labour cost.

Snooky was such a nice place that 10 years ago mates and I seriously considered long term rental of a house there. Great beaches, lovely people and so low cost Everything I read now from visitors saddens me greatly

My first trip there was 15 years ago and I loved the place, but even back then there were signs that things were changing for the worse. Blue Mountain only had a couple of houses left on it by then, the rest were being closed down by the cops. I don't suppose there's a single house of pleasure left up there now. I had friends who'd been visiting there for longer and they said it was a pale shadow of what once was, and this is in 2004. On my last visit, I think it was 2007, the Chinese invasion had already started. There was a massive new hotel (and casino I guess) that had been given one of the beaches as its own private property. The most expensive hotel had recently opened up on a small island catering to Chinese tourists (and businessmen, I guess), the most expensive room ran to a cool $2000 a night. And this in a country utterly mired in poverty.

My first visit coincided with a serious crackdown on armed crime, I was only near one incident involving a gun on that trip at the Fisherman's Den rooftop bar run by Kiwi Brian. The other trips there were no gun incidents, and I appreciated the improved safety. I guess they already knew the Chinese were coming and they would be scared off if there was any untoward shooting so they must have decided to stop it altogether.

It's okay. Have fond memories of the place.

Some banks in Snooky when I was there were paying 15% interest on term accounts. Pretty damn good.

Was it a beach bar? They bulldozed a lot of them.

Yes, many scams but same in Thailand really. In Cambodia the Gov might take it. In Thailand the Thai with the business in Her name might take it. Same same but different. We had no problems at all. They were upfront and honest.

Easy visa

Can work

Cheap cost of living

No reporting

Can run your own bar and everything in YOUR name

Easy monthly tax system.

What's not to like about it?

The Sihanouville "evolution" is a typical example why you should never invest too much, and always be ready to pack.

In this case, I guess the first ones who saw it coming could probably sell at a decent price. Those who waited till being surrounded by Chinese had less choice, take what you get offered, or just watch your business die, go broke and leave with zilch.

Story repeated again and again in "colonial" Africa. Except in Africa, many considered themselves lucky to be able to leave alive.

I was considering a visit back then, briefly. Too late now.

Another interesting development.

I post this here as it is something similar to what is happening in Sihanoukville , but with a bigger political implication.

Could have been poste in China Belt and Road thread, as it is exactly part of that project.
