Teenager Starts Anti-Vape Campaign From Hospital Bed After Lungs Fail

thumbnail.jpeg

A teenager who nearly lost her life, claiming vaping ruined her lungs, has started a campaign to warn people of the dangers of e-cigarettes - all while she lay in her hospitalbed.

Simah Herman, 18, shared the images of her holding up hand written signs on Instagram, as the Californian teen was on a ventilator after suffering from lung failure.

Another image shows her unconscious in bed after being placed into a medically induced coma.

Herman said her symptoms first started two years ago when she started feeling sick all the time.

Two weeks ago though, she began to have trouble breathing. Medics put her on a ventilator and her lungs failed in 48 hours.

Her post reads: "This is all because of vaping.

"Vaping is advertised as 'a healthier alternative to smoking' which is false.

"Whether it's nicotine or weed vaping can be fatal. I was lucky. The doctors didn't think I was going to make it, but with prayers from family and friends I pulled through after almost a week on a ventilator."

Her condition deteriorated quickly after she was admitted to hospital.

She went on: "It took less than 48 hours for me to be put in a drug induced coma and a tube put down my throat because I could no longer breathe on my own. The dangers of vaping are real and this can happen to you. Please don't let it.

"I didn't end up having pneumonia. The signs of respiratory failure from vaping make it look like pneumonia, if they didn't find that first I would have died."

Her post has been liked almost 700,000 times so far and comes after a series of vaping-linked illnesses and even fatalities.

Just earlier this week, anther teenager from Pensylvania was put into a coma, with doctors and his family believing that vaping is to blame for his double pneumonia.

Kevin Boclair, 19, started vaping when he was at high school, quitting temporarily before resuming once more. However, around two weeks ago, he had a coughing fit, and within days, this had escalated to vomiting.

Kevin was subsequently transferred to the ICU at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, where he was placed in a medically-induced coma. He was diagnosed with double pneumonia, whereby an infection causes inflammation in the alveoli of both lungs, and doctors have said he could need a double lung transplant.

Dr Mike Cirigliano, of the University of Pennsylvania, told FOX 29: "We have seen over 200 cases of serious lung injury, one death and people on ventilators.

"Anything that is vaporised, whether it be smoke, cigarettes, vaping in any way, in my opinion, it is not something you want to be doing."

Kevin's family, like Simah, is urging young people to think carefully about choosing to vape.

There was a Public Health report about ecigarettes sent round this morning.

I can update the thread next week when back at work, but basically it said ecigarettes are 95% less harmful than cigarettes.

I tried vaping but kept coughing.
I now use HEETS/Iqos only and have stop cigarettes completely.

Obviously stopping completely is best but these Iqos things seem much better for me, no smell or coughing etc.

Just seen this one on the net:-

Five People Have Now Died From Mysterious Lung Illness Linked To Vaping

thumbnail.jpeg

Five people have died due to a mystery lung disease that doctors think may be caused by vaping.

The Centres for Disease Control and Prevention has said the number of possible cases of severe respiratory illness from people who vape or use e-cigarettes now stands at around 450 across 33 states in the US, NPR reports.

A large percentage of those who have become ill reported using cannabis-derived vaping products with THC - while a much smaller group said they had only vaped nicotine.

In response to the recent spate of illnesses, the CDC is now urging people to pack in vaping until they get to the bottom of the problem.

Dr. Dana Meaney-Delman, from CDC, said: "While this investigation is ongoing, people should consider not using e-cigarette products.

"People who do use e-cigarette products should monitor themselves for symptoms, for example, cough, shortness of breath, chest pain, nausea and vomiting - and promptly seek medical attention for any health concerns."

As yet, no infectious causes have been identified, but the CDC has said the 'lung illnesses are likely associated with a chemical exposure'.

On Thursday, New York health officials said that tests discovered vitamin E acetate in a number of vaping cartridges containing cannabis that had been handed in by people who had become ill.

The officials said this now 'a key focus' of the investigation.

The Food and Drug Administration is now analysing samples for a wide range of substances and is warning people to 'think twice' before buying any vaping cartridges from any unregulated sources.

Mutch Zeller, director of the FDA's Centre for Tobacco Products, said: "With these increasing reports.

"If you're thinking of purchasing one of these products off the street, out of the back of a car, out of a trunk, in an alley - or if you are then going to go home and make modifications to the product yourself using something that you purchased from some third party or got from a friend - think twice."

I don’t do it but On the rig I’m on they have got a vape room now since about 3 month ago, it used to be banned offshore.

Your not allowed to travel with your own vape pen thing you need to buy it offshore. Not got a clue about pricing normally but the boys say it’s a rip off when they are buying the stuff offshore

Medical Scans Released Show Vape-Related Damage

Medical Scans Released Show Vape-Related Damage

Doctors have released pictures of lung scans after numbers of vape-related deaths continue to rise.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said that at least 450 possible cases have been reported over 33 states in the US this year alone.

Minnesota, California, Oregon, Illinois, and Indiana have all seen deaths which have been put down to vaping.

Dr. Dana Meaney-Delman of the CDC said on a press call: "While the investigation is ongoing, CDC has advised that individuals consider not using e-cigarettes, because as of now, this is the primary means of preventing the severe lung disease."

Chance Ammirata, 18, shared this image on Twitter. He said that the collapse of his lung and black dots were down to vaping.

Although it's not been confirmed exactly what is causing these issues, they tend to pop up a few days or weeks after people use their vape - but sometimes they say they've been vaping for years before falling ill.

Junaid Khan, a heart and lung surgeon in Oakland, California, performed surgery on an 18-year-old man who had a blistered lung - this is where air leaks between the chest wall and lung. Sometimes the the blisters can pop up inside the lung.

Khan told Insider that he believes it may have been linked to a marijuana cartridge.

"It's on the verge of becoming a public-health crisis," he said. "When I'm seeing these people, it means they're needing surgery. That's pretty dramatic."

Symptoms of vaping-related lung illness include shortness of breath, fever, nausea, gastrointestinal issues, and weight loss.

Researchers have said in the New England Journal of Medicine that some of the conditions could potentially be related to oils in the the vaporised substance that carries nicotine or THC into the lungs.

Another 18-year-old, admitted to a hospital in New York, arrived complaining of chest pain, fever, and coughing and was found to have fluid on the lung.

Melody Pirzada, pediatric pulmonary chief at the hospital, told Insider: "This patient was actually in a lot of pain and needed to be connected to life support.

"With the great work of our ICU team, we were able to save this patient. But once you come to this point, the chance of dying can be as high as 70 percent."
