Fishing in Mae Sot

Having brought my fishing gear ( unused for a considerable time ) with me when I "moved" to Mae Sot I thought I might start again as I have much more time on my hands up here in the north west.

There is a small lake just 5 minutes away from our house but not having had any rain for three months I discoverd that the water level was quite low and the bank steep and exceedingly dangerous for me. I mentioned this to Sai who then informed me that there was another fishery also only a short drive away. That turned out to be much larger with good facilities ( toilets and excellent cooked food) and a natural lake which has its own supply of underground water and an average depth of 3 mtrs.

So a couple of days ago I fished it for the first time.

Thai's don't seem to get up early to go fishing so I had it to myself until mid morning. I called in yesterday and it was very busy so fishing mid week will suit me.

Although there was much activity with some seemingly large fish rolling I just had the one fish which I am told is phonetically pronounced as "bass-one" 😀

It put up a good fight on light tackle and before I returned it to the water I discovered that its fins were sharp enough to puncture my hand in two places.

I will be back for more later this week and see if I can tempt one of the much larger fish which I am assured are in there.🙂

Looks like a nice place, that fish looks like a striped catfish, Thais usually call it a swaii catfish. They are very common in the local fishing parks and are often caught using a ball of rice powder mixed with bread crumbs, this is compacted around a spring like feeder and cast out with a piece of bread flake pinched on the hook.

How much did they charge you for a day?

That is exactly the method I used and although I tried  a couple of alternative hook baits it took bread flake.

Next time I am going to mix in a tin of sweetcorn and also see if I can get a tin of luncheon meat although I may have to wait until I visit Pattaya/Banagsaray next week.

Sai's sister took one look at the photo and said "bass-one."

They all wanted to know why I had not brought it back? 🤣

I still find this hard to believe but the fishing plus a large bag of recommended ground bait cost me just 170 baht.

I had an excellent meal and a large bottle of Chang for lunch so the day cost me 370 baht plus I gave the young lad who carried my tackle and brought along the landing net 50 baht.

I have only heard it called a striped or Swai catfish so I did a bit of googling and it is also known as a Basa catfish. Every day is a school day.

I have caught hundreds of these and tried many different baits, sometimes a squirt of a sweet additive on the bread will help as it puts more smell in the water, but bread/lam will produce more bites. The best tactic is to cast back into the same place every 15 mins to build a smell/feeding area.

That's a cheap days fishing,  many places where farangs visit start to have dual prices which can make it a bit pricey.

This is Mae Sot.

There are farangs but few and far between and they made me very welcome. The owner spoke good English and I watched him and two mates get through the best part of a bottle of Chivas with their lunch. 🤣

Went out for a meal tonight with Sai's family.

Nothing fancy but there were six of us and we had 8 different dishes; 10 small bowls of rice; two complimentary soups and I had two large bottles of Chang.  Total cost........690 baht. 😀

And expensive.😁

I remember paying £100 over 30 years ago to play 18 holes at The Belfry's brabazon course not long after the Ryder Cup. I had three guests to pay for as well.

Fortunately, those were also the days I had a company Barclaycard for entertaining. 😀

I also recall one of the guests hitting his opening divot further than his ball. The Starter in a box nearly had a heart attack.

I hit my tee shot into the lake at the famous 10th ( thanks to Seve) watched by three coach loads of Japanese who were totally silent unlike my playing partners who were absolutely pissing themselves as I had warned them to be careful not to go right off the tee.

Nice pics.......so if you did decide one day to cook it and eat it, wonder what the quality would be?

Wifey always tells me not to eat fish from the lakes or the rivers in LOS anywhere. Our fish (mostly Salmon)  is usually from TOPS market.

Is she over reacting?  Certainly with no personal knowledge, was not about to debate her......you know how that goes LOL!

I was talking about fishing.

When I calculate what I’ve spent on boats, gear, fuel, time off work,booze......did i mention fuel?

im about $1000 a pound for fresh fish.🤣🤣🤣
but if we want to talk about how much I’ve spent on golf....oh shit,we can do that too.🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️
It’s way to much as well.

With the exception of trout I dislike the taste of all freshwater fish. I think they taste "muddy" even when they don't.

Sai used to buy the freshwater fish cooked in salt that they sell in the markets. I tried it but absolutely detested the taste.

I miss the fresh seafish they sold every morning in Bangsaray straight off the fishing fleet.

I visited again on Tuesday.

Fished from 9.15am to 3pm without getting a single bite and having the place to myself.

Between 2 - 3 pm about 10 Thai's began arriving all of whom seemed serious anglers with good fishing gear.

By 3pm about half the lake was in shade.

I think they knew something I was blissfully unaware. 🤣

I told Sai in future I am going fishing at 2pm up to 9pm when it closes.
