Which is the greatest Second World War film of all?

Recommended Posts

Loved Stalag 17 ....... didn't know William Holden won an academy award.

Also thanks to TKO for mentioning Patton and the amazing George C Scott performance. Spellbinding when he surveys Carthage ......... wonderful actor.

Sands of Iwo Jima ...not seen it for about 40 years but great ending with John Wayne.....

Among classic war films, The Longest Day  is my favorite.  None of the explosions and other special effects were computer generated in 1962.  The attack on the casino was one long crane shot.

The Bridge Over the River Kwai  ranks second on my list, while  Flags of Our Fathers and Letters From Iwo Jima  are third and fourth.  In terms of entertainment,  The Dirty Dozen, The Great Escape and A Bridge Too Far are favorites.

Although not a movie, Band of Brothers ranks with The Longest Day as the best film portrayal of warfare,

Among the movies with WWII as their background,  as opposed to war films, Schindler's List is my favorite.

For me the story behind the book 'The Bridge on the River Kwai' is far better than the movie. The author was French, Pierre Boulle. Their wasn't a River Kwai with a bridge over it until the Thais renamed the Mae Klong River the Khwae Yai River in the 1960's in response to all the tourists turning up to see the Bridge. And the author also wrote the book 'The Planet of the Apes'. Fascinating backstory.

If you have time you should google the author, the book and the whole story, it is fascinating. I especially love the Thais renaming the river to keep the tourist dollars coming. You gotta love em.

For drama, I'd have to go with "Das Boot" and "Saving Private Ryan" which of course have the benefit of many special effects that the older films didn't and that is my main reason for choosing them because there are just so many great war movies out there; for humour, I will always remember "What Did You Do in the War, Daddy?" - this 1966 film featured Caroll O'Connor in a supporting role and it was partly on the basis of his performance in this movie that Norman Lear later chose him to play Archie Bunker in  "All in the Family"...
