dcfc2007 Posted June 14, 2020 Posted June 14, 2020 Has anybody ever visited the city/province of kampot? Worth the journey?

I hired a taxi for the day and did the round trip Snooky-Kampot-Kep and back around ten years ago. Kampot back then was really backpacker country, a nice, quiet town on a wide river. There were some barang bars and eateries but not much else that I could see. It was a pleasant place to have a beer and relax for an hour, but Snooky was far more fun. I guess Kampot was for the types who didn't like the sort of fun you can have in Snooky (or Pattaya). From what I've read more recently, it's grown quite a lot since then and has a lot of Chinese, or had before the C19 pandemic. There wasn't much more in Kep, to be honest, and I was glad to get back to Snooky. The main thing I'd wanted to do was to drive up the Elephant Mountains and visit Bokor, but they were building the new road up there at the time and it was closed. A decent day out, anyway, but I wouldn't bother going back. Of course, Snooky's changed completely since then too... 3

I have been looking for a side trip to somewhere in Cambo but I haven't heard many good reports other than Siem Reap. 1

The road up to Bokor is now open and as long as they haven't knocked down all the old French ruins it's well worth a trip up there. I think there's a casino on top now, probably best avoided. There were some barang nosheries by the river in Kampot, I ate lunch in a place called the Rusty Keyhole (or something like that), and remember it as it served the best bread and butter pudding I've had outside the UK. The famous pepper crab in Kep was OK, but way over-rated.
Xuv Posted August 22, 2021 Posted August 22, 2021 I was last in Kampot March 2020 and it has developed greatly in the last 20 years into a lovely town. Inexpensive to rent accomodation, lots of good quality restaurants, beer costs between 50c and 1$ on average and there are now about 18 girly bars and some lovely hostesses. Pattaya expats may find it a little quiet compared to what they are used to.. 1 2

Khun Ling Posted August 24, 2021 Posted August 24, 2021 I’m in. Sounds like the “Good old days” 1K baht LT for a 19 yo lady 1
Xuv Posted August 25, 2021 Posted August 25, 2021 Getting a visa to enter Cambodia is currently difficult and lockdowns and curfews there are switched on and off. 1
cartoonman Posted October 21, 2021 Posted October 21, 2021 I went to Kampot 2 years ago - I was told it was Fantastic - As above it`s a pretty Tiny Town - you can walk everywhere in a few hours - Cheap Beer - Nice Food - CRAP ROADS - Knocked my Back out in a Taxi hitting Pothole after Pothole..I stayed in a Great Place right next to the river BUT I had BOOKED for a Week and IT WAS 'BORING AS BAT SHIT'..I kept feeling 'This is the Place to go to get you prepared for when you DIE..' No. Not for Me...Glad I've seen it but I will never go back... 1
