Pattaya-
Heavy rain in Pattaya City this afternoon caused major flooding and traffic delays on many Pattaya roads. A video we took is below.

The rain hit mid afternoon and lasted for about an hour and a half. At times, the level of the rainfall was quite heavy.

The heaviest flooding was reported on Sukhumvit Road, Pattaya Beach Road, Pattaya Third Road and areas with low elevation such as South Pattaya, Nong Yai, the railway road, Soi Khao Talo and Soi Khao Noi.

Water found on road surfaces ranged in height, with particularly deep water at several feet deep on Sukhumvit Road in front of the Mueang Pattaya 4 School.

On Pattaya Beach Road, water had been released to the sea as there was major flooding. Portions of the beach appeared to suffer from flood related damage as well.

Traffic remained backed up along major roads for several hours. Traffic police were sent to multiple areas to brave the storms and help direct traffic.

The Pattaya City Mayor, meanwhile has said that the drainage projects designed to fix this issue that have been ongoing for a year is not yet completed. Additionally, several city water pumps are currently not working and are waiting for repair parts that are backordered and in the process of securing. He stated the project was delayed by several months when the city had all construction work stop due to the Covid19 Coronavirus situation.

Just read this on Pattaya one news and I guess there's a lot of truth in this....

Update: The REAL reason Pattaya keeps flooding

The real reason Pattaya continually floods is so simple to understand, and easy to x, that it is surprising nobody on the City’s authority hasn’t already tackled it.

In Pattaya, there are thousands of street food vendors offering anything from noodle soups to meat pies circulating the city almost 24hours a day.

There are food markets all over town offering both cooked and uncooked products every afternoon and evening.

And, at the end of each shift, every single one of them pours their leftovers into the nearest drain. So far so good, you might think.

The problem comes when it doesn’t rain, because then this food waste lays rotting in the drain only a few feet from the street surface.

Then, later on in the evening the taxi drivers come along, park up and place a mat, or ragged piece of carpet over the drain so they are not disturbed by the smell of the food vendor’s festering waste.

When it does rain, thousands of drains around the city are covered up and nobody thinks to remove the mats.

And so the streets flood and everybody blames the local authority.

Well, somebody recently seems to have, at least, partially worked it out. They are finally on the right lines

Food vendors at the X-Zyte weekly market were caught flushing food waste into Pattaya’s sewer system.

City spokesman Pinit Maneerat said that ONE vendor was cited for littering and creating an untidy area.

He has been fined 1,000 baht and warned that a heavier fine and jail time would follow if he does it again.

City Hall inspectors also witnessed several other vendors dumping food waste into sewers, but they ran away and avoided fines.

Pinit said the market will now be monitored to make sure litter and food is disposed of legally.

They might also want to patrol Soi Buakhoa and every other soi removing all the old carpet from the drain tops and start fining everybody who puts them back.

Until then, the flooding continues.

Pattaya doesn't have a proper drainage system, clogging up what is there, whilst making the problem worse, is not the main issue. Until they build a proper drainage system and clear those illegal buildings that are blocking the city's canals, this is going to happen every single time there is significant rainfall. They should be more concerned with fixing this problem than building a monorail system.

When you apply for a food/restaurant licence, the one thing they check is waste and cooking oil disposable.
I have seen gangs of convicts, driven in to Pattaya from the local jails, to go into the sewers and get buckets of gunge that clog the drains.
