Jambo Posted October 18, 2020 Share Posted October 18, 2020 We were sorting out a large storage box in Bangsaray and came across a couple of photo's from our visit to Genting Highland Resort in Malaysia. The first one is in Snow World which was amazing for Sai who had never seen/experienced snow even if it was artificially generated. That really is "snow" and, quite understandably, it was freezing. That was taken about 10 years ago before his poker addiction made everything go pear shaped. Should have seen the writing on the wall as Genting Highlands Resort is a massive casino complex. Yeah, probably why we have so few Thais in Canada....I’ve read less than 10,000. I always joke that there are more Viets in one suburb of Montreal or Calgary than Thais in all of Canada. But the Thais that do come here, I swear more than half I’ve met have their own restaurant We don't have that many up here in the YT and I have met several of them but as far as I know none are running restaurants - more the domain of the local Chinese who have been here seemingly forever. I think we have considerably more Viets than Thais but by far the biggest ethnic group after the First Nations people are the Filipinos - they are everywhere, and some have done very well for themselves. I'm seeing a lot more East Indian people moving in as well. I learned the Sikhs/Pakistanis go where the $ is......good friend of mine from Calgary bought a franchise in Laval with his brothers. About 5 years ago, he invited me for a steak, between lunch/dinner rush. It was like 80 km, my folks live on South Shore.....anyway met his bros, and while they don’t speak a lick of French, that’s what he said...follow the money. I love those people, from taxi met many of them. But I honestly have an issue with their dominance of the trucking industry. There is no way they are following all the regulations, and with one race controlling 2/3 of all drivers....I think we will see many more incidents like Humboldt. When I moved to Edinburgh I found that no doubt due to its proximity to the sea there was far less of the white stuff but you only had to go a few miles inland to find the snow drifts. I once drove from Newcastle to Edinburgh on the cross country route in what became a complete blizzard. I reached the sign which said "Welcome to Scotland" which is at the top of a very steep hill and when you looked down it was impossible to see the road. I was the second car in a group of about six vehicles all stopped at the top of the hill wondering what to do next. Eventually the first car set off and we all waited to see what happened. He got to the bottom okay and off he went so the rest of us less brave souls all followed in his tyre tracks. That border area is very wild, bleak, countryside at the best of times and I have never been more glad to complete a journey.
