Vivo vs Oppo smartphones

I was in BigC today and noticed some nice looking Vivo and Oppo phones for a lot less money than your average Sangsum phone.

I think the most expensive one was roughly 10K while the Samsung on display was advertised at 35K.

Anyone have and can recommend an Oppo/Vivo? Which model do you own, how's the camera and battery life, etc?

I've had an Oppo for over three years and have no complaints, other than that the camera's not very good in dim light. I get the impression that the new models have fixed that now and the cameras are better, at least in the pricier models. When I bought my Oppo, I also looked at Vivo, but their main selling point was their super-selfie camera, which really didn't interest me. When you pay through the nose for a phone these days, you're mainly paying for the name (especially in the case of Apple products), the amount of memory, and the camera. If you're not a brand snob, don't need hundreds of GB of memory, and are happy with a modest but still pretty decent camera, then there's no reason a phone should cost you more than 5K Baht.

I bought an Oppo last year to replace a Samsung, neither of them were top of the range jobs but the Oppo has been brilliant, good camera too which was a big thing for me, also 64gb internal memory which is more than enough for me. Nothing at all against Samsung but if this Oppo gives up the ghost anytime soon ( which I doubt ) then I'd happily buy another Oppo.

My wife presently has an OPPO F5 but as she has dropped it she will be getting an OPPO A9 for Christmas.  She got the OPPO F5 in 2017 (I think) and it has served her really well since, came with 64GB standard.  Picture quality so much better than my Samsung A10 or my previous Samsung S5.  The OPPO F5 was bought in Thailand, the OPPO A9 was brought in UK for £125 this month in a Currys sale reduced from £179, it has 128GB storage.  Believe the F5 was around 7500 baht.

Porn will not have any other phone even though I suggested changing to a Samsung; she uses it extensively for photos, FACEBOOK etc.

I got a bit bored with Samsung taking up so much space on my phone even when I deleted many items, it just seemed to store the miscellaneous files elsewhere in the operating system which reduced overall storage and saw me reset back to factory settings on a few occasions, must really get 64Gb minimum these days if a heavy user of Facebook, camera, video etc.

I have found my usage of a phone utilises a fraction of what is offered on an expensive phone so a cheaper, high storage OPPO would be an ideal next phone for me.

I looked at the a93 instead of the xiaomi when I bought mine because it had 8 gig of RAM and the xiaomi I bought had only six but the a93 has a mediatek processor and I've always been happy with Qualcomm the reviews are good.

I saw a few YouTube reviews and the performance looked more than adequate for my limited usage. It doesnt support 5G but for this price I don't mind buying a new one in a year or 2.

A bit more than half a year ago I bought an Oppo Reno (6 GB memory, 256 GB storage) as there wasn't an LG available when I needed one quickly. I'll never buy a Samsung as that comes with way too much bloatware.

I agree I have shite on there I never use and can not remove plus I'm getting spam on my Thai sim never had that when it was in my oppa ,guess I'm paying roaming charges for the spam

  • 4 months later...

I think my Samsung J7 ( had a Note 4 before ) has just died.

3 weeks ago it refused to charge the battery. Got a new battery, and this evening it is refusing to charge again.

The last couple of months it's being doing what it wants, rather than what I'm asking it to do, so I'm resigned to starting over. The question is, what do I buy ? Advise please . . .

I use the phone as a phone, and I use the standard Smart Phone functions. All the major Messaging Apps ( WhatsApp & Line predominantly ). Gmail. Google search. Calendar. Camera. Mobile Banking.

Previously, I've insisted on having a phone with a user swappable battery, but they seem to be as rare as hens teeth these days.

Don't need to spend more than necessary, as there is always the prospect of dropping it whilst working.

Reading the more recent posts, would I be correct in assuming the xiaomi or the Oppo A23 are reasonable choices ?

Just about anything other than Samsung and Apple is a reasonable choice. One minor point though, LG is quitting the phone market, so even if you see one for a very reasonable price, you might wish to give it a miss.

Four or six weeks ago, the battery in my Oppo was playing up. I’d charge it to 100%, then after 20 minutes of just sitting there without being used, the charge was already back down to 90%. Several times when I charged it, the battery became extremely hot and the phone stopped charging because of the heat generated.

I assumed the battery was on its way out, it’s 3½ years old after all, but I Googled the issue of the hot battery during charging and it said – sensibly enough – that this is most likely caused by processes that are running and consuming a lot of battery power. When you try and charge the battery at the same time they’re draining it the result is a lot of excess heat generated.

So I had a look at what processes were consuming the most power and it was FB and Skype. FB I use every day, but Skype maybe once a month, so I thought that was odd. Anyway, I went to the battery options in settings and selected the option to automatically optimise power use for those two apps when an abnormality is detected. That fixed the problem, no more hot battery and no more of the battery draining even when the phone’s sitting idle.

I’m amazed that a smartphone dinosaur like myself was actually able to sort that out, lol!

I have an OPPO F9 which I purchased on the day they launched it in Big C near Bangsaray.

Apparently I was their first customer on that launch day and they took my photo and gave me a whole load of free goodies.

I played my helpless, IT illiterate, farlang smart phone ignoramous user card and they loaded all the usual apps I regularly need. I asked if you can phone people on it but for some reason they did not see the joke.

Anyway, no complaints whatsoever and much cheaper than the hiso brand alternatives.
