Options for farming in Thailand

My wife's plan is to retire back in Thailand and open up a fish farm. She worked on a fish farm many years ago and believes she knows what is required to be done.

We pay off our investment apartment in Australia next year and she says she will buy the land then to start preparing her dream. As this will hopefully cost me nothing I will let her go ahead while I stay out of it.

Maybe start with free range pot bellied pigs.
We have a couple near our house in Bangsaray and they just wander around munching away in the hedgerows. Appear to be very low maintenance.
Sutuk buriram, yes pigs was my first choice!

Thanks for the offer, but i will have to decline.  You would probably upset the neighbours and end up trying to shag the local Goats!  55555

Vaguely remember some guy started a thread on one of these forums about dairy farming in Thailand, but could never take a decent photo, so I gave up on the thread.

His cows contracted hoof-and-mouth disease and had to be culled...

A very good thread actually.

It's worth saying again, one of if not the best thread I have read on Thai forums over the years.

Vp's place is near Loei which is a lovely part of Thailand, very scenic. He knows his stuff for sure, think I am right in saying he has a ranch in the States.

Miss seeing that thread. Had it bookmarked when he posted on Shhhh. Too bad he hasn't joined this forum.

He does have a place in Texas and may still be there due to Covid.

I don't know if you'd make money out of it, but I'd love to see a smallholding that specialises in growing non-Thai chillies. Things like jalapenos, Scotch Bonnets, habaneros, and maybe even the ultra-hot ones like the Carolina Reaper. The Thais might be interested in them, but their cuisine isn't designed for the very hot peppers, so I'm not sure you'd sell many to them. The farang market in Pattaya, Bangkok, Hua Hin, Phuket and so on might be large enough to make it viable, if you could find a way of distributing them.

Used to meet VPI 78 whenever he came to BKK  ( not every time ) in Soi Cowboy ..  we always used to eat at a place ( sad I forget the name -- really good food .. the guy that owned the place was from New Orleans ( I think )) .. VPI seemed like a real good guy

I always had a standing invite to go up to his place ... but, I never found the time ....

Man .. that is sad ... if all of his cows died of hoof and mouth disease

VPI's thread on Pattaya Live was excellent, very informative and regularly updated, his life on his plot was most interesting.

Andy and Phil did go to his 'estate' in Loei and I did meet with him at the Pullman Hotel in Khon Kaen together with his wife, my wife and Andy with his wife.  I had also met him one time at the Rockhouse on a nice social gathering, seemed a nice guy.

Unfortunately I had it on good authority that after I left Pattaya Live the guy had made some remarks about me and my wife that were quite negative.  I find this quite unsavoury considering we had met but as I have never logged back in to PL since I left I can not verify what my good friends have told me.

A few people who left PL were assassinated online by the usual suspects but I wasn't expecting it from people who I had met in a social setting where nothing but positive vibes seemed the order of the day.  Me, I am not too fussed about it as I am unlikely to meet up with these people again but annoyed that my wife could be brought into a topic on a forum with negative comments made.
