fygjam
More likely a bad day for P&W slightly less than reliable dependable engines. Both incidents involved P&W engines. Edited February 21, 2021 by fygjam
Horizondave
Been on a Philippine forum where somebody posted about the 777 incident and then went on to say that he was glad that it was American Pilots on modern aircraft using quality airports and that had it been in the hands of SE Asian pilots it would have been a different story. He chooses to fly 1st world airlines only and happy to do so. His comments got reaction that they were somewhat nationalistic bordering on racist without quoting any data to back his view up. The airplane was American, 22 years old with Pratt and Whitney engines so didn't really see the need for his post. The skill of the pilots is good to see although the engine hadn't fallen off the aircraft or damaged the controls but happy to see nobody has been injured. Freee!!
What isn't in that story, is that at the same distance of the runway, but in the opposite direction, there is a large chemical plant, which would have been hit (with most likely severe consequences) if the plane had taken off in that direction. At the end of an exercise at RAF Bruggen we were all in the mess eating our tea with our NBC suits & gas masks piled up in the corner when the tannoy broadcast "This is the Station Commander, all personnel are to return to their place of work immediately with their NBC kit".We thought oh shit the balloons gone up & the Russians are on their way. Turned out that there'd been a fire at a chemical plant in Maastricht, which is just down the road from Bruggen, and there was a large cloud of potentially poisonous gas floating around.Luckily it stayed away from us.
