Chanthaburi

Recommended Posts

Off the tourist path, two-thirds the way from Pattaya to Koh Chang, the town still has an international feel due to one of the largest gem markets in the world.  A local employer is Thai Gems, started by a guy from Texas.  You may see him driving around town in his Lamborghini, Ferrari, Porsche, or Hummer.  Some people say, "the only way to make a small fortune in Thailand is to start with a big one."  That is not necessarily true.

I lived in Chanthaburi six years and what I liked most was how down-to-earth the people were.

A view of Trirat Road and the morning mist, from the KP Grand Hotel, tallest building in town.

The best place to stay is the Maneechan Resort, not as well located on the Sukhumvit Highway, but with a large pool and garden in back.

This hotel construction fell victim to the 90's financial crisis, the locals think it's haunted.

I had many meals at the 49 Steak House, between the KP Grand and Robinsons, chicken or pork steak with fries and salad for 49 baht (79 baht today).

The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, built by Vietnamese immigrants over a century ago, is one of the largest churches in Thailand.

There's a man made lake in the middle of town equipped with a fitness park

I spent a lot of time at Marina Body Massage downtown, much better than joining a gym.  In the current line-up, the 1700 baht girl is younger and prettier but the 2600 baht girl delivers two shots.  There's another soapy downtown but the name is only in thai, two blocks down and across the street.  Less expensive but facilities not as good.

You could hangout downtown all day and never see another farang.
