Bangkok – Rayong High Speed Rail Project

Recommended Posts

Now that work has begun on the high speed rail project linking Don Mueang, Suvarnabhumi, and the U-Tapao airports, thought it would be good to have a topic to track the construction progress with photos. It'll be interesting to see how the area changes over the coming years.

Project Description
The Bangkok – Rayong High-Speed Rail features a 1.435-metre standard gauge track with capacity to serve a maximum speed of 250 kilometres per hour. It travels on an elevated route with a 300-metre tunnel portion near Buddha Mountain (Khao Chi Chan) spanning 193.5 kilometres. the rail connects with Suvarnabhumi Airport, the Bang Sue – Rangsit Red Line, and the Bangkok – Hua Hin High-speed Rail, easing traveling between Bangkok and the eastern region of Thailand. The project involves installation of the track, system work and equipment in order to meet the standards of a high-speed railway.

Latest news report on the start of the project: High speed rail project construction in Chonburi linked to three major airports expected to start this October

Hope they have good elevation of the track as this area is the low point between Kha Noi and Khao Talo that floods every heavy rainstorm.

Pattaya city to move forward with major drainage project intended to fix flooding by Pattaya railway

Pattaya City will start a major new five-year project that will have a significant budget with the first phase of construction set for next year to help solve the continual flooding problems along the Eastern Pattaya railway road area, as well as improvements to the South Pattaya drainage system.
...

Just another in a long string of public works projects that have only a marginal impact on the flooding problem.

Still, it would be nice in 2026 to have condo in Bangkok and wake up on a Friday morning and catch the early high speed train to Pattaya.  Arrive in 30 to 40 minuets, for 200 Baht, and hit some GCs for the afternoon.  Then on to LK or WS for GoGos or Discos, party all night, and catch the Midmorning train back to Bangkok and be back in your BKK condo by lunch.  Never having had to get a hotel room in Patts or getting caught in a weekend traffic jam.

Of course, I am wondering what condition the passengers would be in and if the train may get the moniker of "The Drunk Train".

Just dreaming here.

quite interesting  - i wonder if it will be elevated above the road and if there will finally be a solution to the dangerous junctions with the railway road

The project description mentions "elevated route", so hopefully that means above flood level, but more importantly eliminates dangerous level crossings.

  • 1 year later...

Current state of construction progress can be summed up in one word, stalled. It's been about a year since they completed the construction of the access road and this is what it looked like this morning. Can understand projects being worked on in phases, but in Thailand the time lag between phases often times is measured in year(s).

if those photos, and I drive that route daily are for the high spd rail iink then is a mess.  up down around.. not even level, and only bits done along the railway road.  no accounting for bridges or crossings.  it will be a decade before it comes close to completion.  it was supposed to go close to the lake, but these days, who knows

I recommend you make that decades. Anybody remember those 1973 plans for a "New Bangkok International Airport"?

I believe the road pictured was built as an access road for construction crews. Just a means to keep their equipment off the main road to avoid disrupting regular traffic. With all the corruption in Thailand, suspect that plays a major role in how/when public works projects are started, finished, or never completed.
