Popular Post john luke
A first walk along Beach Road alongside the sea. Clearly the deck chairs are back and so are some other activities on the beach. More water pumps have been installed. Preparation ongoing for the Pattaya Music Festival. The pink Cadillac has vanished from its hotel locus on Beach Road. Other things which are familiar are still there. Lottery ticket sellers - not as many as I would have expected considering how close it is to Lottery day. Fewer people sleeping out on the streets. 12

john luke
Along Naklua Road this morning as far as Dolphin Circus. A new filling station appears on Naklua Road; I watched it being built during last trip and could not work out what it was going to be. Other than that not a great deal of change since August. 1

john luke
A few familiar places. Not much development at the planned food court based on the aeroplane, but all is well at the building complex near Sir 6 as the star Security Guard is still there; the building work has progressed too. 1
Butch
I can't honestly see Drinking Street lasting any longer or surviving. It was empty on my last trip and has turned into an area preferred by Arabs it seemed. Can't think of any good reason to go there, especially as Treetown / MIT are developing further. That area is also ripe for a Hotel / Condo development. Great pics JL, thanks. Until they allow bars, booze and birds without restriction in Pattaya, it's appeal will be very limited and visitor numbers will continue to be low. John, a few questions for you: How does the "infrastructure" compare to your last trip?, by which I mean more or fewer Baht buses, are you noticing more MC Taxi's around, traffic and have the works on Walking Street come to an end yet?. I recall one of your earlier photo's from your last trip of a lone girl apparently sleeping rough. Is this still an issue in town (homeless people living in closed bars / derelict buildings), would you say things are on a similar level to before or noticeably improving?. I notice the curfew has ended for Pattaya, but it is still not a "blue zone" for entertainment. We can only hope they allow booze sales soon, so as to tempt the thirsty out to spend some money... It is funny that you ask that question because I had been thinking that the number of both baht buses and motor cycle taxis had gone down. As far as Walking Street, I have not had a walk there as yet but should do so in the next day or so. 2. Whilst my morning walks at the moment are starting around the 0800 mark, rather than the 0700 they were starting previously, personally I think there are fewer rough sleepers. There is still evidence of abandoned buildings being used for rough sleeping but certainly not to the extent it was prior to August. 3. I must tread carefully when mentioning bars and alcoholic beverages, yes the bars are closed and it is unlawful for restaurants to sell intoxicants with a meal. I do note that not in Pattaya but other areas, where persons have been prosecuted they have been prosecuted for offences under the Covid 19 legislation and not breaching liquor licensing laws. There is no shortage of beer wine or spirits in 7/11 and Family Mart. 1
john luke
A visit to Central Festival; there is a Japanese Food promotion going on at the moment. Having left Central Festival I was greeted by torrential rain, so retreated back for a coffee to pass the time. Some minor flooding but as far as I am aware nothing serious. 1

That answer is qualified by saying the large holes in the road which were dug have been filled in, however there is a tremendous amount of what I would call finishing off work. There are lots of areas with little holes or loose and missing paving stones and overall a great deal of work is necessary to properly finish the job. From what I saw in June, July and August and what I am seeing now, I think Walking Street has suffered more than most areas of Pattaya. In terms of businesses it was about the least diverse area in Pattaya, with around 90% bars/restaurants, 5% massage parlours and 5% other businesses such as small shops, 7/11 and the like. The entertainment industry has been hard hit and there were not enough other businesses in the area to keep the place anything like 'ticking over.' There are a high number of premises and businesses for sale or for rent; a few are to some degree mothballed and capable of resurrecting without too much difficulty; however there are others which are abandoned and in need of significant major maintenance and refurbishment before any business could operate. I have always tried to promote Pattaya in a positive way, however to do so in respect of Walking Street is an almost impossible task. 2

While they appear to have finished installing the large junction boxes, I've not seen any evidence of work done to run underground cables to the junction boxes. They also haven't gotten around to installing the street level junction boxes through which the feed from the undergrounds cable is connected the buildings' electric feed. When they proceed with that phase of the project they're probably going to rip up the street again for the laterals to the underground cables. Makes you wonder why they don't do all the digging work at one time. 1
john luke
It felt strange as I approached Bali Hi and the Marina; it looked like a UK cold damp and misty day, but being in Pattaya it was hot. Look how the colour fades into mist on some of the distance shops. The Waterfront development seems unchanged from August when I last visited.
