I thought I would start this thread here in this section, as it will probably get more input than some of the other "Not Thailand" type thread. Might be a good place to share info. on various places that might be enjoyed either for short visits or even long stays.

I just came across this vid in Youtube. Looks like an interesting place. And this girl got my juices flowing.

I've traveled around Mexico a lot. Many interesting places both to visit and stay longer term. Language is a lot easier than Thai. Not sure about the "lady" action for foreigners.

In terms of ex-pat life there's many of the some of the same pitfalls as Thailand ("manana"). But an easy going attitude will pay off with an easy life...

Personally I'd rather live in a coastal city than in the jungle. I like "life" right out my front door.

Zihuatanejo is a cool place with nice beaches.

The name of that town is etched into my soul, and is a huge factor in what sparked my desire for travel. Thanks to the movie most of us know very well and love.

Had a few film shots digitized though...

Back when I had two weeks paid vacation...I'd fly in to Zihua...take a taxi to the super mercado...buy two weeks worth of groceries...

Then taxi it to Posada de Los Raqueros just north of Troncones. I rented a cabana right on the beach (the one with the lights below) and would stay there for two weeks...did this three or four times.

http://www.raqueros.com   (it's changed a lot since 2001)

Ahh...the good life. Everything has changed a lot since then...

Nah, was just a regular tourist...never even thought about paying for it romance back then; just never had other than a couple of quick stops along I-80 in NV when I was a misfit. Mustang Ranch baby..!

First trip to Troncones was with former wife#1. We had a good trip: stayed on the beach; rented a car and drove up in the mountains to Patzcuaro, Michoacán. 2nd trip took my mother and two of her friends; rented a big house on the beach with a pool. I took care of all the arrangements and drove.

Another trip I did a favor for a buddy and escorted his wife who had terminal cancer while another friend (a cancer survivor) joined us. That was a tough one as she was a wonderful woman who had just retired from the USN. It was a dream of hers to take a beach vacation to MX. Her husband could not swing it due to his job and their kid. She died a few months after the trip.

After that I made a number of solo trips to Troncones, Puerto Vallarta, and some of the colonial mountain cities: Zacatecas, Guanajuato; Leon; San Migual de Allende, Morelia, back to Patzcuaro (for the Day the Dead).

Last trip to MX was Mexico City in 2011 to see the pyramids at Teotihuacan. ...saw god on top of the Pyramid of the Sun (2nd  pic)...had climbed to the top of the one in the background earlier in the day - Pyramid of the Moon. No mean feet at 7500ft elevation (coming from sea level in Thailand).  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teotihuacan

I probably shouldn't have taken the picture of the bike going by. This was a bad part of Mexico...lots of narcos. The bus returning to the outskirts of the city was stopped by the federales and all the men had to get off to be searched. I was asleep when a woman officer came down the aisle and I gave her some guff when she woke me up...thought she was selling something.

Enjoyed Mexico City a lot. Great place to eat, sight see, etc. Steeped in history.

Lost count of all my trips to MX...started making them when I was 19. Many adventures and crazy times.

Great stuff Laz !

Reminds me of my multiple trips to Costa Rica (where it all started really) back in the early 90's. Sorry, no pics currently as they are all buried somewhere and I'm too arsed to pull them out at the moment.

Lovely country and at the time I was figuring that would be the place I would end up, but that all changed when I discovered LOS in '99. Those plans are still "in progress", but I have to admit the past few months I have begun to contemplate other places.

One thing for sure though.... When I finally put it all together (Dog/Buddha willing) I will be out of here forever other than brief visits to see family.

You know the old saying -- "if you want to hear dog laugh makes some plans"..?

These days I just takes it day by day. I've already so to speak  "lived my dream" a number of times and now have more responsibilities than ever. Best time of my life in many ways.  Funny how life works out.

The challenge will be at 75-85yo and beyond. Things change. Good to have escape routes; visualize how things will play out in multiple scenarios (you've encouraged this in other contexts).

I'm sure that's why you started this thread.

The World is a great place to visit, even if it is just in the mind.

I just returned from my 8th trip to Kenya. Love the people, among the friendliest I've ever met. Plenty of girls to keep company, Covid not a problem, curfew was eliminated a week before I flew, many bars have a license to sell booze for 24 hours and they never close. More spots to travel to in this world than Thailand while wasting time and endlessly waiting for Pattaya to reopen to how we want it to be.

The Dominican Republic is another, and much closer to home, for our NA members at any rate. Best bang for the buck going for a vacation or a long term expat relocation in the Western Hemisphere.

I know this is a Thailand-centric board and we all can bitch and moan about when things will get better, when things will reopen, when the restrictions will be eliminated, etc....but enough is enough!

Life ain't stopping for any of us. The time has come to quit putting all your travel eggs in one basket in the hope that Pattaya will once again be just as it was, and look for a different place to visit. It wouldn't be the comfort zone that Pattaya has become for many of us, maybe most of us, but it might be a breath of fresh air to give yourself a motivational kick in the ass and discover new places, and meet new women.

The time is right now. Make those plans, book those flights and hotels, and introduce yourself to a whole bunch of fresh faces with sexy figures, gorgeous smiles and a desire to know you better. Without the bar fines.

Lets roll!

Turkey - I have never been there, and I know the country is not for everyone. But, I have heard from many many people it is a fascinating place to visit.

Now is the time to go as the exchange rate is incredible. Something to consider.....

I wonder how many will get bored of waiting for Thailand to relax restrictions and try other places and never go back to Thailand again ?

I wonder what Thailand will look like when it does open fully again . People’s fav bars closed . Shopping malls and condos built in their place

After watching "Midnight Express" I vowed I would never visit Turkey and I never have. Irrational I know but there are plenty of other countries to explore.

Anyway, Turkey got its own back as when giving my speech at my daughter's wedding I mentioned that comment as their honeymoon was in Marmaris. Three days later there was another earthquake and they spent two nights sleeping on sun beds next to the hotel's pool. 🤣

Having worked in Muslim countries for long periods there's no way that I'm going to one on holiday!

Love the place, so cheap at the moment as well.

We're going next month to Side, which is a lovely, very historic port town.

I love history and such, this place has Roman, Greek, Byzantine ruins, hisotry etc.

Some phenomenal 5 star hotels there as well, which never close, so are really cheap for the standard in off season when we're going next month, be about 20 degrees, which is fine for us.

Cool. Seems like we share an appreciation for history, among other things it seems.

Depending on when I can get out of here I may plan a "stopover" there on my way back to LOS. Difficult to make any solid plans for me at this point. But, sure will be percolating the next few months.

I have been very lucky since I first flew on an old Dan Air dive bomber out of Luton. My bucket list runeth over so to speak.

Did the Pyramids and Bethlehem on a three day rust bucket cruise out of Cyprus. Some old General used the Sphinx nose for target practice!

There is something really uplifting in Israel. The sight of an 18 year old female soldier with a pony tail and a submachine gun hanging from her shoulder gets you every time.

I'm off tomorrow night, Jan 4th, for the Dominican Republic and enjoy some warm, tropical Caribbean weather among the usual menu of delights. Temperatures dipping down into the upper 20's overnight in Northern California and unfortunately, my central heater went out on me while watching the football game Sunday night, woke up this morning and it was 57 degrees inside the house. Brrrrr.

Just hoping Delta doesn't cancel my flight. Fingers crossed.

Have some "business" to attend to! 🍹
