lazarus
I've been through this station ^^ dozens of times. Just read that the SRT wants to tear it down and build a shopping mall. How "Thai" of them.

Derek Dangleberries
Designed and built by Italians. Knocked down and replaced by glass and concrete by a German because, for sure, nobody else would dare touch such a piece of history built by Rama V . Which is a good thing of course, to have such a forward thinking German whose only interest is the welfare of Thai people! Sounds like they plan to keep the old station as a show piece...but it will cost a bundle to do this. Folks are upset about losing train access to the central city. I always go through here at least one or twice when I'm in Thailand and other than the diesel fumes enjoyed it.

Yup, I felt the same when the Makasan area (especially the workers houses) was bulldozed 20 odd years ago. The area that Jaem from Lucky Lukes and many other friends of mine used to live or originate from. Too much real estate for it to exist in its present form.

I hope they can go with a "green" area development. Bkk could use it !
Horizondave
Other than the train journey from Kanchanaburi to Than Krasae I haven't had the pleasure of riding a major train route in Thailand. I hope to try out a trip between Hua Hin and the south at some stage.

Traveled RT Bangkok- Uthumphon Phisai (Sisaket Province) on a regular basis & also Bangkok to Trang (sleep train). Traveled by train in the far south to Sungai Kolok on the southern border a few times. That line's been a war zone for 20+years. Before some of the trains were recently upgraded traveling was "third world' experience. Nowadays there are newer 1st Class sleeper trains on the main routes. The local trains are still quite an adventure... Golfingboy
Never had the pleasure of taking a train from there, or anywhere in Thailand. Have always heard the overnight sleeper to/from Chiang Mai was a must….oh well 9 hours on the bus was long enough for me.

Glasseye
Bangkok's BTS is really developing. My first visit to Thailand (Bangkok and Pattaya) was back in '98. It was a tremendous experience that left a very deep impression which planted a seed that is still growing. That first visit left a few vivid memories. The first few days there I stayed at the Royal Benjja Hotel on Suk, Soi 5. I can remember my first night there after checking in... walking down to Suk from the hotel heading to Nana Entertainment. The most vivid memory that I still clearly recall was as I reached the end of Soi 5 at Suk, looking up at the BTS line which was still under construction. It was probably around midnight. As I viewed the work in progress I could see multiple workers doing there thing. Sparks flying everywhere. I thought to myself at the time, "Wow, that will be really cool when completed. I then looked in all directions - all the amazing sights, smells and sounds hitting me at once. What a bombardment of the senses.... and the night had just begun. I was hooked already, Over the years and the countless visits since then I developed a real appreciation for the BTS. I began to use it more and more. It opened up countless opportunities for me to explore and learn about the fascinating city. I look forward to years more of extensive exploration there, and much of it thanks to the BTS (and MRT).
Yesitisdakid
I have ridden the Trains from there many many times very easy at that station. I visited the new station Bang Sue to have a look not yet open but I do hope it will be as easy as the old station.

Or, even later a CM-BKK route down when I get back.
