LOST HIS HOUSE

tommy dee

Recommended Posts

3rd chap I know in as many months has found out his wnderful and loyal, :differet" wife has gambled away his house, which of course, is i her name

seems this time she pledged her land to the money sharks, then the house later.  since she has now done an ofksi,   he and his adopted daughter ( with him 23 yrs) are left homeless and penniless.  the house is in some remote village and he had the offer to buy it back, for an outrageous amount but, as he says, why would he borrow to cover that, and live in the same village as her family.. from whom she has also borrowed.

as usual, having a farang husband or BF was seen as guarantee enough.

its an old story, but is regurgitated  more and more now, especially since covid hit and, sadly, to people you woud normally thing were very shrewd

BTDT - Moved on.

I have made too many mistakes in my life to dwell on them and am happier for getting on with my life.

Although the smug do like to take a look down on my kind with a sneer from their superior perch.. normally BMs on TVF...

Perhaps you should approach the subject from another perspective: "Why do some people show so much unhealthy interest in other peoples' business" It certainly aint through concern.

'Tis one reason I keep away from farang.

Definitely a good warning about buying a property in Thailand - there are so many downsides and risks that IMO it just aint worth it.  This situation and many others should serve as a warning of the risks of buying/building in Thailand where you cannot own land and you have very few legal rights.

Personally I intend to rent upon our return, and we will put a sum of money into wife's super account in Australia, which becomes her long term financial security.   I have heard about a guy years ago that had it happen to him (in Udon Thani) but he didn't take it well as Derek, and he took to the drink - last my mate heard he was renting a flat somewhere in Pattaya - sad.  That was what convinced me.

And of course that guy in Yasothon that had someone put chickens in a vacant lot nearby. Plus the guy I heard about  that bought a place and a karaoke bar opened up next door where there was once a shop. Actually there are others too when I think about it - especially the ones about noisy dogs and neighbours holding street parties.

I have rented before and dogs (barking all night) are a big problem in a lot of places.  Renting is the plan - if we have problems - we will move.

Shit yeh. The same thing happened to my Mum in UK. Apparently, at the time, a farmer could keep chickens in a trailer on his land if it is mobile so the fucker had a few trailers behind my Mum's house but every few weeks he'd move them...Fucking stank the house out!!

So it is not just in Thailand!

I have lifetime USUFRCTs on both our properties in Thailand.  So my name is on the chanotes.  Mainly in case anything happened to her, no one else has any say until our children are old enough to become the house masters.

In any case, she doesn't gamble - we went to Vegas once and she played a bit and decided she'd rather see the shows, has a drink maybe once every few years, and is a terrific partner in all things.

I have seen some here who have the gambling addiction bad, though.   Ruinous.

Usufruct is definitely the way to go to protect your interest in the house, but wonder if it would protect you from debts rung up by your partner.

Usufructs in Thailand

"The usufructuary is responsible for the expenses for the management of the property, paying taxes and duties, and being responsible for interests payable on debts charged to it."

I have to approve any debt placed on the property after the USUFRUCT is registered with the land office.  Which I wouldn't.  I am responsible, for instance, for the community fees at our place near the coast but I knew that going in.

The property can be sold during the USUFRCT, but it's unlikely as the buyer can see the property is encumbered, so they couldn't take possession.  Thais use USUFRCTs as collateral for loans.  So for instance until a loan is repaid a certain plot of farmland would be farmed by the USUFRCT holder instead of the owner.

Thanks for reminding everybody that the thread is about gambling rather than the social status or working background of wives.

Gambling exists at all level of Thai society ...... if you catch my drift ...

We are in Spain just now and about to go to the casino for an hour then find a Sunday lunch. We both enjoy a flutter and will aquander 50 Euros. Sometimes  we come out in profit. Got an owned house in Pattaya and built one up North. Together since 1997 and married in 2010. Some arguments of course but generally  OK. 7 years age difference helps l believe. Short times with 25 Yr old now and then works for me with my wife's blessing.

Step foot in a Casino Filipino and it is rammed with people spunking their wealth. We stayed at the Manila Okada which had a Casino inside, and at a guess, 70% of the cleintele were women, but the poker tables were mostly guys.

As gambling is legal there, it's not an underground practice, but that doesn't stop people gambling all what they have.

I've heard a couple of horror stories from Thailand, one guy I know had the Mafia turn up on his doorstep and ask for the keys etc to his bike, he duly handed them over, and left his Mrs that night. He had no idea she was gambling either.

I think I'd have done the same.

What I like about both of these posts is that neither mention farang involvement.

I too know two blokes that were working away sending money home to their wives for their long term future only to return home and all the money was gone, spent on Giks and Gambling ........ No farang involvement.

Reminds me of my mate in the Philippines whose girlfriend went to the casino with 2000 pesos he had given her.  Later that day she came back all happy and told my mate she had won 600 pesos. He went to confirm with her that she now had 2600 pesos, 'no' she says, I have only got the 600 pesos I won. He gave up asking her anymore as she didn't understand that she had indeed lost 1400 pesos.

Sadly the girl in question died of a stroke last year so I won't comment on what he and I said at the time.

Oh my, reminds me of my old boss about 20 years ago. He ran a very successful business, all cash, but whenever we went out, it was just normal to drop $700 in the slot machines, which are how many Canadian pubs turn an actual profit. He’d jump up in the air after a $200 win, not realizing how many bills he had inserted the prior hour. These machines, we just call them VLT, are simply evil and have probably caused many bankruptcies/divorces, many guys become addicted very quickly. Especially in the oil/resource economies, lots of fat paycheques given to young men who don’t know any better. I’m sure @maipenrai can confirm my story

I’m no angel, have dropped a few grand in my life on blackjack and more recently poker…but much like my absolute disdain for cigarettes, I will NEVER put my money in a VLT

Thanks for the mention mate.

I just want to reiterate that I am living an extremely happy life where I am, and the reason I post is to show that no matter how low you get in life there is still a future.

Great advice mate - too many (especially blokes) take it to heart far too much, and become self destructive.  As the old saying goes something like this:  "When you are in Hell, do not stop - keep going and eventually you will find the exit".

That is great to hear - and the age difference can make a difference. Too many 60+ blokes find out years later that their 30 year old girlfriend/wife aint what she started out to be.  Some can make it work - but many struggle. I am in 60s and Thai wife is in 50s (menopause almost done) - we will both grow very old together (I hope).

Yep - ditto.  As they say - no matter how good it is - in Thailand you must have a Plan B with a quick exit. For everything from the wife gambling, to the wife allowing Uncle Somchai to use property for loans, to having most of your money invested in a property is a very dangerous strategy. Everything should be in Plan B - from moving to a rental in Pattaya, to moving to The Philippines, to going back home.

Like Tommy D. know too many similar stories. The ones that get me are the ones that get rinsed more than once.

The Brit high speed train driver on great money. Lost two houses cars etc and last time I met him up in the boonies he was asking me about a girl he had just brought back from Pattaya ................ aaarggh ...... sadly he dropped dead last I heard.

Aussie skilled boat builder houses land all his savings gone ..... she was in hook to a local Thai / Chinese mafia nasty piece of work.

Ex-army smart guy lost .......... list could go on and on. It is mainly gambling rather than drugs etc ...

When I worked at a Computer Systems Head Office one of my fellow managers used to tell us about his winnings. He once announced that he won £9000 and we were all in awe thinking how does he do it. The reality when digging deeper (one night out with him when he was drunk) found that he only ever told us about his winnings and in reality the fact was that he had to remortgage his house as he once lost £30000. He was always on the bread line and his life was depressing with stresses with family and friends.

The fact is most people will tell you about their winnings, very few (rarely) will ever tell you how much they have lost. On a former forum I remember the ones who would happily tell you they had won money on a horse or a football bet, I wonder how many of those guys were actually in credit in real terms from their spending.

Actually, we don't have these machines in pubs in my jurisdiction; in the pub that I mainly frequent, there are a few people who will run over to the minimart next door and buy a bunch of those tear-away tickets at the lotto counter and then open them in the bar, but they are not allowed to be sold in the bar itself.

Gambling is one thing I never did much of, even though in the '80s we had the only legal gambling casino in Canada where I was living in Dawson City, and this was allowed only because it was operated by the local non-profit tourism association as a tourist attraction. Funny thing is, I can sit down and spend $30 or so on beer and be perfectly happy but if I lose $20 at a blackjack table, it is not fun anymore and I feel as if I have wasted that money. I never learned to play poker and have no interest in doing so, and my only betting indulgence nowadays is buying squares in the football and hockey pools which I have actually done quite well on over the years.
