Glasseye
I am beginning to think that owning some Thai gold is a good idea. With these movements toward the push toward "non-cash" policies and with the many potential risks associated with tech related bank f**k ups, etc., potential for debit cards, credit cards to be frozen up or being locked out for bot sensitivities (and the difficulties that can be encountered with restoring, waiting for a replacement card, etc.) that gold is a good idea to have. Any thoughts ?

lazarus
Another goldsmith, this time in Songkhla, posted a photo of herself with a gun on social media to deter potential robbers after one of the four armed gold robbers in Tak province was shot by another goldshop owner on Thursday. Her photo is now going viral... https://www.facebook.com/KhaosodEnglish
lazarus
Would you like to have gold or gun first? More goldsmiths posted a photo of themselves with a gun on social media to deter potential robbers after one of the four armed gold robbers in Tak province was shot by a goldshop owner on Thursday. The robbers in Tak province hastily retreated after shooting the glass door of a goldsmith on to enter only to have the fire returned from the shop owner who happens to be a award-winning sharp shooter. One of the hooded robbers was shot and injured after he tried to restart his motorbike while another arrested. Social media users hail Pisit Rapitphan, 46, as a hero. https://www.facebook.com/KhaosodEnglish 1

What will start happening now is the robbers will just shoot up the place before they (store owners) even have a time to react. Saw in the news recently a report on a gold shop robbery conducted by several masked men on motorbikes. Can't remember where it was. The store owner shot and killed (I believe) one of the robbers as they were fleeing. I have no idea what the authorities will do on that case. But, the store owner may find himself in a world of trouble as when someone is "fleeing" and poses no direct threat it is not considered as "self defense". The owner could end up getting royally f***d. Place is going to start looking like the P.I. before you know it. Shot gun carrying mopes on every other door step. f**k that ! Talking of the PI (and wandering off topic) I was in an NPA area a few years ago and as I was working on a government project we had a police escort to take with us when outside city limits. We needed a measuring tape so stopped at a Mr DIY and walked in with the police escort. The Mr DIY shop assistant told the policeman to deposit his weapon before coming in. There was a bit of an argument before they asked me for my decision. I managed to peacefully calm the situation down, avoided attack by the NPA and bought the tape measure. The police officer slept in the car.

Here in the USA if you shoot them while they are running away and no longer represent a threat to you it is murder. No idea if they have that issue in Thailand. IMO it is a good law if it's some kid burgled your home and is running away with your laptop. Don't shoot. But in the case of an organized group of criminals using guns I have no sympathy for any one of them getting shot even in the back.

Sympathy or not is one thing.... the consequences following another. I guess one could look at it similar to that old saying... Glasseye
Tennessee v. Garner, U.S. Supreme Court Ruling - https://supreme.justia.com/cases/federal/us/471/1/ The key ruling on shooting a fleeing felon. Basically one of the most significant rulings related (in the U.S.) to police conduct (or misconduct). Any cop who is properly trained should have had this pounded into his head. How it applies to private citizens in Thailand, I have no clue. But, I would reckon it is probably not a good thing to do.
