Don't believe much of it.

Looks an unlikely innocent target for a gang looking for rich tourist to kidnap.  lLooking a picture of him in Phuket pre the incident, hardly looks like a guy flushed with cash.

Maybe he has a history in Phuket and has fallen foul of the local mafia
