Opticians in Pattaya

I've bought several vision products from these people over the last few years and have always been pleased with the service; for example, recently a pair of glasses that I had brought with me from Canada suddenly lost a sidearm and they were able to fix me up with a new frame in less than 24 hrs and for a very reasonable price:

They're easy to find on the north side of Pattaya Klang not far from 2nd Road.

Hit and miss experience for me. Visited 2 opticians for my day time glasses and both f***d up leaving me with shite specs and dizziness. That was in Central BKK.

Went to a local one in Don Mueang for prescription sunglasses and they are perfect.

That said, both did not give a comprehensive eye test which is a must at my age.

Back in 2009-10 on my extended trip, loved the fact that for about 200THB I could change my eye colour with the contact lenses, had blue & green on different nights. But never purchased any eyeglasses, have heard from many folks it’s often pricier than back home….

YMMV

Many speak highly of Euro Optic.

On the flip side one that has received many bad reviews is any of the Top Charoen outlets. I know from personal experience their 1 year guarantee isn't worth the paper it's written on. I ended up tossing my 1 month old glasses I purchased from them in their garbage bin when they refused to honor the guarantee.

As I've posted before, the Top Charon I went to in BKK many years ago was top notch. The ones in Pattaya may follow the standard Pattaya business model.

  1. You are farang.
  2. You have lots of money.
  3. You are only here for 2 weeks.
  4. You can be given any shit they like.

Before worrying about opticians I'd do a bit of my own research (where have I heard of that before). Grandmothers and eggs might come to mind but...

Frames.

Are you supplying your own frames or do you want to buy them as part of the deal.

If buying them there, what look.

image.png

The Wayfarer, Aviator or something else? Note. years ago when I bought some RB Aviators online I didn't know they came in different widths. I do now.

Lens Colour.

What colour tint do you want. The following may help you decide.

https://www.visiondirect.com.au/optical-centre/lenses/tinted-lenses-advantages/

As well as the colour of the tint, what density (amount of light transmitted), graduated tint, photochromic?

Lens Manufacturer.

Any preference there? I like Hoya lenses for my reading glasses but I buy my sunnies "off the peg".

Anything Else.

Mirrored, polarizing etc?

Once you have your requirements sorted then I'd go looking for an optician.

The optician has only 2 jobs.

  1. Determine if you're a fat head. i.e. accurately measure the distance between your pupils.
  2. Cut and mount the lenses in the frame with the focal points at the required distance.

Good luck.

That is all.

Euro Optic is the way to go. Was recommended to me by Larry years ago. I have purchased three different pairs from her since (two of them I had lost... (onc dropped out of my pocket when on a motor taxi hurrying back to the room to trounce a hottie. The second pair I lost while stopping to wipe my sweaty brow when stumbling back along beach road following a hell of a night in the bar on Soi 7.).

If anyone one finds a better place then Euro Optic then please let us know. I doubt though there is any better. I will get my next pair(s) from her as well, even travelling from C.M.

Probably been bitten by guys in the past.

What sort of price does she charge for the test please?

I've paid $300 all in. But, I get much of that back with insurance reimbursement.

She sends the Rx and measurements off to a lab in BKK. I would reckon most lenses by a decent optician sends them to goes to probably one, two or three big labs. Takes a few days for them to be sent back. Also give yourself time to adjust. Takes a while for the eyes to adjust to the new specs.

To be on the safe side you can get an eye exam at one of the better quality hospitals. Probably worth every penny if you haven't had one for a while. Glaucoma and some other issues can be identified early on with a proper exam.

An important test is for glaucoma. They put drops in your eyes that cause you to see yellow (If I remember correctly), and you have to stay out of the sun for a few hour. Glaucoma is something you don't want to mess with.

I too don't have a breakdown, but my total bill was almost £600 (25,000 THB) for my varifocals.

The glaucoma test uses a puff of air on the eye.

Had to look up what the yellow dye you referred to. It's a fluorescent dye used check the cornea for abrasions.

Pretty soon some or most of us will be getting cataracts. Something that now appears to be a piece of cake.

I've got one now following recent surgery and will probably get it seen to in a few months.  Jomtien hospital has been recommended to me.

I've just had a very interesting conversation with ?Maria at Euro Optics in her shop, which is about half way from front to back on the northern side of Royal Garden, on the 1st floor (that's up one flight of stairs). Open 11am to 3pm daily.

She will NOT do an eye test alone. Her eye tests come as part of a "package" for supplying glasses.

My current glasses came from Specsavers, and were collected a couple of days before I travelled. I've never been happy with them, often feeling giddy when I look around, and taking them off to read.

I explained all this, and she did some investigation with a marker pen and ruler. Her diagnosis was that Specszvers had put the focal point 5mm too low in the frames, the focal points were 2mm too spaced apart, and the varifocal "corridor" was too narrow. Both make perfect sense to me.

A new set of lenses (she mentioned the brand, Japanese,  but I forget it) to her prescription, for progressive varifocal, 1.67 thinned, react-alight, anti scratch and glare, would be about 18,000b.  Frames 2,000b upwards.

As she said, using someone else's prescription can only cause problems.

As all these places, loads of frames on display, but I didnt see any Denis Taylor upside down specials for @boydeste's pool playing...

I thought her place was on an upper floor. Maybe that is considered the 1st floor and the floor you walk into is considered the Ground. I always get confused with this.

I plan on staying in town for a "shopping" weekend and want to get my eyes tested too...

At the moment my plan is to visit the one in RGP then head off to PBG but has anybody tried the one on Soi Buakhao near soi 19/Buakhao market/opposite the veggie shop??

I only know of it because it is near my Sato supplier !!

Mate, Euro Optic in Royal Plaza is great. The old dame in there is highly regarded by many. I've gotten three pairs from her over the years, never disappointed.

But I am not sure if she is what you need for a comprehensive eye exam. If/when I am in need for that I would surely go to one of the hospitals. In Pattaya I would go to Bangkok Pattaya.

I just need glasses for my trip home... I reckon I could walk around Pattaya blindfolded !!

I'm thinking photochromic bifocal lenses to deal with the bright sunshine in UK, read the signs at the airport and watch porn on my PC...

Any idea how much she would charge for one pair..???

No idea about bi focals, but varifocals, thinned, with reactalight coatings, with frames, and eye test to work.out prescription,  was about 23,000b from euro optics. Cheaper options were available with lower quality lenses, but not that much  cheaper

23,000 is around 550 quid...

What is your opinion if I say why not wait until I get back to UK..Get a free eye test then buy the same thing there for 400 quid..?

I'm just being subjective not argumentative and I value your opinion.
