fygjam Posted February 24, 2023 Posted February 24, 2023 The NTSB has released its preliminary report into the East Palestine, Ohio, train derailment. Apparently Track side fault detection equipment detected a hot bearing on one of the cars. The driver was notified. The driver applied the dynamic (gentle) braking system in order to stop and inspect. The hot bearing reached a sufficiently high temperature to rupture the pneumatic brake line where air pressure holds the brakes OFF. The loss of air pressure caused the emergency brakes to be applied. This caused a number of cars to concertina and leave the tracks. So the safety system caused the derailment? 1 1 3
