fygjam Posted February 24, 2023 Share Posted February 24, 2023 The NTSB has released its preliminary report into the East Palestine, Ohio, train derailment. Apparently Track side fault detection equipment detected a hot bearing on one of the cars. The driver was notified. The driver applied the dynamic (gentle) braking system in order to stop and inspect. The hot bearing reached a sufficiently high temperature to rupture the pneumatic brake line where air pressure holds the brakes OFF. The loss of air pressure caused the emergency brakes to be applied. This caused a number of cars to concertina and leave the tracks.
