At the start i said wait until she's a little bit older and has a good grasp of English, then teach her Thai as well. But then i hear our daughter singing Thai songs perfectly to her relatives in Thailand via Line or whatever. Well, i've no idea if they're perfect, her mum says they are 😄 So i just let them get on with it. Their brains are like a little sponge when young, absorb everything.

My daughter -- who just turned 8yo - is fluent in Thai & English and also speaks fair Isaan/Lao. She was born in Bangkok, then moved to her home village in Sisaket when 2 months, and we split time between TH & the US until she was about 5yo. She started off in pre-school in the village and also attended pre-school when in the US. At 5yo she moved permanently to live with me the US. She attends a local public school that we can walk to, as well as weekend Thai language classes at the local Wat. I read to her almost every night before she goes to sleep. Her mama lives close by (about 30 minutes away) and they speak mainly Thai when they are visiting. She practices her Thai writing and reading with her mama. We travel together for two months each summer in TH/SE Asia. While I'm off seeing Asia, she stays with her grandparents and attends the local elementary school (her TH family are teachers). We missed this summer due to the COVID travel restrictions. When I lived in TH people told me it's important for mixed kids who grow up overseas to learn TH -- speaking, reading, writing -- as they have a good chance of living in Thai when they are adults and are at a disadvantage if their TH skills are limited to speaking. She a good kid, very bright, engaging, & she loves the ocean... Edited July 6, 2020 by lazarus 3
