I actually enjoyed learning it and Thai’s appreciate you making the effort to speak their language. When I spent 11 months there in 2001/2002 the lady living with me would teach me everyday and I would help her with her written English, which was really good. Her spoken English was excellent. Considering she had little education she was really smart. That's interesting mate, I never realised you had once progressed that far with your Thai. Totally agree that any small effort to speak the language is generally appreaciated. 1

My lady on the other hand had an English vocabulary of about six words when we were first met. Within a couple of years of living together she became fluent in English. Other than three months of formal instruction, the rest was all self taught via reading and YT videos. 2 1

It is a difficult language to learn, especially regarding the tonal aspect, but I have always seemed to be able to pick up languages fairly quickly. It was something I enjoyed doing. 4

I managed 10% in my final French mock O-Level, the only subject I failed to pass. I am embarrassed at my pathetic grasp of the Thai language. It has taken me some 18 years to accumulate maybe a few hundred words and short phrases and I still usually rely on "Sorry, my Thai is nidnoy." 1

Thank Dog for google translate. It's just not going to happen, like trying to learn how to golf (I know the basics, but otherwise can't be arsed). I can pick up Espanole rather easy though, and after a few months down there next year I expect to pick up quite a bit.

And half the time I am still not completely sure. lol I seem to manage well without it, although when out in the sticks it can be a bit challenging. 1
nampla69 Posted March 22 Posted March 22 Most Thais you guys meet speak Isaan Thai similar to Lao. Once you can detect the difference between the two weirdly becomes easier to understand. (London boys will understand) ....... mutton and Geoff ..... anyway how is that substation at Heathrow doing ???? 4
