I know in the past I have seen posts by guys on the forum using drones.

They have come on in leaps and bounds over the past few years.

My budget is around £300 to £400.

I would be using it to fly over lakes and countryside up to 1km radius.

The objective is to record at least HD and hopefully 4k video, also be able to see on the handset or phone the same image.

Any advice from you guys that have experience of using them would be appreciated.

Can you use a drone to (a) locate that monster fish, and (b) carry your hook and line, before dropping it into said monster fish's path? Surely that's cheating....!!

"I have photographic evidence of jaws on my hook at 1.2km from the shore following a world record cast.  It was a tough battle, but at 1.1km from shore jaws broke my line. Needed at motor to wind the rest of the line in."

Can certainly use it to locate fish if it's sunny and the lake is clear!

Will be part of it's use on very large waters abroad for sure!

I have a DJI mini SE (not sure if we talked about it) must be 3 years old now.

Bought it for use on the Forest restoration project I dream about and just playing around really. Only ever used it in the UK for 1 day and TBH I never registered it with the authorities.

However, it was all legal in Thailand all be it in my girl’s name with me as a named user for insurance. Using past tense because I crashed the kin thing last year and just haven’t bothered to fix it yet, so I haven’t renewed the policy.

Really enjoyed learning how to fly and get the best pics/video. It does take time and might not be as easy as you think first off. So glad we have the land to practice on and Covid lock downs gave me the time.

Biggest lesson for me in terms of getting quality 4k video or images was learning what light or time of day it was best suited to. The “golden hours” absolutely make a massive difference.

In terms of pIloting the thing I would recommend a larger quality screen phone and again light plays such an important part. If you can’t clearly see the screen because of reflection you will have problems.

Sure they are big boys toys IMHO but as the saying goes…..

Whoever has the most toys when they die

Had brief thoughts about doing a You Tube channel thingy but lost interest after my first attempt. Maybe try again when I get round to the forest restoration project.

If that is your first attempt at a vid, you did a decent job for sure.

I know there is a lot of work that goes into the editing of such vids.

Nice shirt and hat BTW. LOL

I bought a potensic atom which is in your price range,4k video, under 250 grms,no need to license it,its really good.

Reason I bought it ,I was to lazy to get mavic air 2 fixed, well didn't really have time, being only in UK for 2 days a month, but while  off work 2 weeks I fixed it myself just by updating software on it,changing propellers, bing good as knew.

Anyhow dji range o wouldn't buy for a first drone, the atom is perfect and light ,and small enough to fit in your pocket, bought it from amazon.

Some good reviews of the atom on YouTube.

I am really pleased to hear this.

The Potensic Atom was what I have been looking at with the 3 axis gimbal.

Excellent video, really enjoyed it.

Nice to see a video with some actual information along with great pics and video clips - plus a commentator not speaking at a million miles an hour and full of their own importance.

Really good work. I've liked and subscribed. Hope you make a few more.

Totally agree..

Other YTers make themselves the centre of things and spend seconds on the background issues ..

One idea for @Smiler is to do a complete vlog on Eeten (Village trucks). Show them being used by different owners and find out where the nearest "dealer" is and watch them being cobbled together... I've been to a couple and it is like a graveyard of engines and trucks.. Bloody fascinating stuff to fly a drone over and around the village !!

Other vloggers may show one driving past for a few seconds ..like NDTVi.... then continue talking about themselves ....

EDIT = for the final 4to5 hours of my drive home from Pattaya M'Lady and I had a competition to see how many we could spot first...I won of course.. and it kept me awake..

Good use of the drone can really set you apart from other vloggers and with your style you could be on a winner with some unique content, which the drone will allow you to do.

The Potensic package deal I bought comes with three batteries. I understand the rules state I have to carry the batteries in carry on luggage. Any idea if I'll get pushback on carrying three batteries?

Depends on the airline.  Some limit the total capacity, some the individual capacity and some the quantity.  The TSA also have some restrictions.

I also bought the 3 battery package.

That's a good point and something I hadn't considered.

I'll report back after my return to Thailand on 3 July if I have any problems with carrying the batteries on board. From what I've read it should be ok. I'll place electric tape over the contacts and place each battery in its own zip lock bag.

under thai Law, "technically" you have to have a drone licence, only issued to thai nationals.  it appears that is ignored by many without issue tho.  in certain area, they are banned tho, military areas, airports etc.  I think they are amazing, only used one once or twice and always scared of it not coming back and having to to go and look for the damn thing.  maybe they have improved?
