What becomes of old Bar Managers?.

Apart from a few stalwarts (Ricky, Egg, Hammer and a few unmentionables) I occasionally wonder what happens to these guys when they either get out of the game through ill health, run out of options for work or if they even plan for the future.

I know of at least one former Manager living in the UK who's now living in a bedsit on the dole, unable to work and also had horrendous trouble upon returning due to some awkward questions from the DHSS, not to mention having a problem getting treated on the NHS as they didn't believe he was a permanent UK resident anymore. He had a great job, a fairly stable and solid future and had he been slightly less erm...frivolous, could possibly have stayed. Sadly, though, alcohol dictated his path and led him to where he is now.

During my last trip I got chatting to an NWG manager who told me he was "living his, my and every guys dream" - to which I asked him if he had planned for the future. Nope. He intended to enjoy himself, spend his wages and will stay in pattaya for the rest of his life. Good luck mate. The thing is, he wasn't 18 or 19, thus giving him a bit of time to get settled into a decent job in a few years, he was mid 20's.

Now I am aware we have one or two former Managers on this here forum who are doing well for themselves, but I'd ask if any Managers actually have any kind of retirement plan...

I know one guy who was a "meet and greet" type manager on Bangla Road in Phuket for at least ten years  .... he ended up with Cirrhosis and went back to the U.K. , he was very lucky to get a transplant ... he's still in U.K. and I don't believe he drinks anymore 👍

Not just managers but owners.

I know of two that went back to Australia for the two years residency before they can take the Australian pension.

Another sold up and went back to his original trade in the UK where he's still working AFAIK.

I had retired at 50 before I had bars but left for the UK due to non-alcohol related health problems.

I still come back to Thailand for 4 -6 months every year but that journey isn't getting easier. I keep saying one more year.

I am still amazed that cirrhosis didn't get me.

After 15 years I retired here I didn't come here planning on working but I'm glad it worked out. I worked for two different clubs and back when I worked I made very very good money was covered medically and life was good. When I retired at 62 Social Security kicked in and the 15 years that I had worked I was able to put away a substantial amount of money about 60% of what I made when into savings for the future. In doing that it really paid off for me I'm here retired living comfortably traveling a lot and doing what I want to do when I want to do it. It helped that I worked for two very successful clubs well successful in my opinion anyway.

Do you think that not drinking alcohol helped you?

Seems to me that a lot of problems in Thailand always stem from alcohol and lack of control and you always seemed to me like like you had that well cracked.

I used to visit a bar in Soi 8 next to the hotel I stayed in.

The gentleman that owned it was good company from England.

I think he was fedup with the bloke who had the club next door.

Sold it and retired.Great bar.

There was a bar manager who once had a rather thick moustache. Gave me the best head I have ever had.

I assume this was a Thai bar manageress on Soi6 or Walking Street, i wonder why you didn't make a bid. On the other hand if it was an ex LAPD cop who retired and managed a bar in Pattaya i can understand why you didn't.

Remember him well, great guy that always looked after me very well. He certainly was a bit of a character.

Same, same.

If Bruce was with us Paris was always visited on a night out in the Walking Street area. One of my least favorite venues but amusing to witness Bruce and Louis arguing with one another as good mates sometimes do for entertainment.

^^^^

He was on clean up duty.

I had a much older brother.  A complete fcuk up. Been dead for years....

Married about 5 times, a real idiot.

His last wife (before he hung it up and moved to the P.I.) filed for divorce. In her complaint filings on the divorce she claimed that he would wank off and have the dog lick up the spunk.

She also wrote a letter to my parents to humiliate my brother.

She was a pig.

Of course nobody in the family believed her. But,  I did and totally lauged my ass off.

One anecdote that might appeal to a few who remember him was Louis, the owner / manager of Paris A GoGo on Diamond. He would walk around with a small stick and lift up the skirts of his girls to make sure they weren't wearing any underwear.

Bless him, he ended up in an old peoples home in France, and as far as I was told, he still had the stick...much to the chagrin of some of the female Nurses who looked after him.

I have heard that v.d. is rampant in some nursing homes. Should give us all hope in belief that there is a God.

Other than having fun and absorbing every bit of reality I can.

Did he not hand over the day to day running to his step son?

The last time I saw Pete was a couple of years ago, he had come into the restaurant for a Xmas party - I believe he has been living upcountry somewhere for years now.
