Computer repair recommendations?

ChiFlyer

Recommended Posts

Hi - this is Chiflyer, just in case that does not show. I am logging in from my phone for the first time ever.

I am having a laptop problem. It is not charging. I have a Lenovo Thinkpad X1. It is a rather high end one and is only 2 years old.

I suspect that the problem is either the charger or possibly the battery. I suspect that it may well be the battery, as there is a warning light on where the USB-C is connected.

I have been googling repair shops. Pattaya2U has its fans and also some bad reviews. The best regarded place seems to be the one across from Foodland on Pattaya Klang. It is called Wattana Systemnation.

I will call both of these places in the morning to see what they say.

Any comments about either of these places or also any other suggestions?

Have you considered going to Tukcom, Pattaya Tai. You can choose a shop to do the repair.

Any sign the battery is swelling? For example the casing expanding or the touchpad not working?

Good luck

My understanding is that the quality of service at the Tukcom shops is questionable, at least when it comes to hardware repairs.

Pattaya2U is a former Tukcom shop that opened a new store a few blocks away. Their negative reviews seem to be dated ASEAN posts.

No signs of swelling.

Does the laptop run ok using the mains cable?

Not too sure what you mean by the main cables. The laptop runs just fine, except the battery is not taking a charge and will slowly grind to a halt. I shut it down at about 40% to go in case I need to do a backup prior to handing it off to a repair shop.

If you plug the cable in that you use to charge the laptop, will it run without draining the battery anymore than it already has?

No, the battery will continue to drain.

In that case it's likely your power supply that is at fault. Try replacing the fuse in the plug if it has one.

Also, try moving the cable around slowly in case you have a broken wire, which normally occurs close to the plug that connects to the laptop.

Btw, I would do a back up if possible  regardless of whether you fix it or not.

I do one every two weeks. Will do one out of sequence prior to any repairs.

Done that several times.

Is there an alternate power port? If so, try that.

Independent of the above, try another cable and another power supply/charger. If that doesn't solve the problem, the problem is most likely the power connector/USB-C port in the laptop.

Personally, I would also open up the laptop and see if I could see something obvious, but I leave that to your judgement of your skills.

If you end up having to buy a new laptop, you can probably transfer the storage device to your new laptop, saving you the hassle of installing everything. In case of different form factors of the storage device (SSD vs NMVE), cloning it might also work, but will take a bit longer than swapping.

It's toast mate. Been through about four of them like that.

Your only hope for sanity is to throw it out the window and buy new.

After removing the storage device to use in the new (or as external storage).

These are the guys you want to go see not only are they excellent computer repair people but they are very very fast and very cheap. I've had three or four different PCS worked on by them a couple of them I was told we're ready for the garbage cheap and I'm still using them today after they were fixed by these guys. I took a computer into them telling them I needed a new video card they told me it would be 3,900 or 4,900 baht if I needed the card. I left it there went to get a foot massage 30 minutes later I get a call from them telling me I can pick it up when I go to pick it up it's 400 baht there was another issue it wasn't the video card. These guys could have easily charged me for one as I told them that's what I felt I needed they're honest and they're good I highly recommend them

Hey @forcebwithu given that you are a tech guy and also that one of these shops is in your general vicinity, any comments?

I see a couple of solid recommendations for Pattaya2U so would give them a try. Alternatively, Mr. Google informed me there is a Lenovo Exclusive Service Center - Bangkok (map link) that you could take it to.

The plot thickens.

I drove over to Pattaya2U this morning. The original charger seemed to be working at their location. I bought an additional charger for 900, just to have a backup on the theory (by me) that the original charger was starting to go bad. The backup also seemed to be working at Pattaya2U.

I am back at home now and although the computer says that it is being charged the battery level is not going up. I am at least partly to blame for this situation in that I misdiagnosed the problem and misled the Pattaya2U staff with that misdiagnosis. The chargers are fine. Indications are that the battery is not accepting the charge.

This may have been going on for a while. I ran straight off of the battery yesterday afternoon for an hour or so and that caused the dramatic battery reduction that got me going on this.

As long as the laptop is plugged in, the battery level holds. I will call Pattaya2U in a bit to see if they concur and what it would take to get a replacement battery. I can limp along like I am for a while.

I called Pattaya2U and they agree with my new theory. I need to drive back over there so they can take a look at the battery before ordering from Bangkok.

The battery is toast mate. The only solution is a new one (battery or computer). Factor the cost of replacing the battery with buying a new one. Keep the old one for back up.

A hassle no matter how you cut it, but running back and fourth to a shop IMO is an absolute pain.
