Anyone use these in Thailand?

Thinking of taking a couple of them with us next trip.

Are Mosquitoes Attracted to UV Light?

Despite their popularity, bug zappers and other UV light traps are not very effective for mosquito control. While they might lure in a few of the pests, these products are more likely to catch beneficial or harmless insects instead.

Electric Control Devices / Zappers

Although mosquito control devices are commonly marketed to treat heavy mosquito populations, they have not been proven effective. These devices electrocute insects that approach them. They produce unpleasant sounds and require frequent cleaning. Because these devices utilize an electrical charge, they should be kept away from children, pets and foliage.

I had a "killing lamp", but as others have correctly pointed out it did FA.

I do have a bunch of the electric fly swatters scattered around the house that are very effective. And the sound of mosquitos getting zapped is music to the ears.

However I am thinking about upgrading to a laser zapper. :default_biggrin:

Just after the turn of the century I was in Bangkok preparing to return to Oz when I decided that a mozzie zappers would be just the thing to deal with Aussie blowflies and so purchased a couple. In those days I travelled with just a soft kitbag for my checked baggage and I thought these zappers will not survive the gentle attention of airport baggage handlers so I decided to take them as hand baggage.

Through check-in and immigration at Don Mueang and into the departure hall and a stop off at King Power. A bottle of Tanqueray for my sister and a bottle of Bombay Sapphire for her daughter, my niece. As I was struggling with the bottles of grog and the mozzie zappers the shop assistant gave me an enormous King Power bag to hold everything.

Boarded my aircraft without problem and 6 or 7 hours deplaned in Perth. Through immigration and collected my checked luggage and was heading for the exit when I was selected for x-ray. Remember the days when only the select few were x-rayed. The operator, seeing me struggling with my checked baggage in one hand and the enormous King Power bag in the other hand nodded towards the KP bag. "Duty Free?" I nodded. "Don't worry about that, just the other bag on the belt". No problems and I was off home.

A couple of weeks later I had to go to Melbourne for a few days on business. One evening I was out for a stroll around town and passed Customs House.

And there

in the window

on the display board of prohibited imports

amongst the nunchucks

and star knives

and stuffed cobras

occupying pride of place

were mozzie zappers.

Clearly a moral decision had to be made. I could either return the next day, confess to my heinous crime of smuggling in not one but two mozzie zappers and throw my self on the mercy of the bureaucracy or just keep schtum and carry on as normal.

(At one stage mozzie zappers were listed as a prohibited import. Someone thought they could be converted into stun devices or some other form of weapon. Electronic photo flashguns on the other hand which have the same high voltage but a zillion times more energy were ok. Mozzie zappers have now been removed from the list.)

As to their effectiveness against Aussie flies. They work ok on the small house and bush flies although they tend to get caught up in the wire mesh and emit a foul smell while being arced to death. But for blowflies, forget it, they just laugh it off.  Although once I must have got one just in the right place. It took off like its arse was on fire. Zoomed here, zoomed there then dropped down dead. Life in the blowfly fast lane is short.

Bloody excellent things. I recommend the ones that have a detachable torch at the bottom of the handle.

The smell of singed hair when you zap a few together smells like ...... victory !!!

Closed doors, closed windows, and air conditioning, plus I give the GF a good kick up the backside whenever she leaves the door open after going outside; those are my protections against the damn mossies! lol

Yep it works very well here too but we've just had "family" staying for 3 weeks and they didn't bother with such niceties ..

That's a good question,  because It's widely believed that they are not, but in some studies it suggests that at the right frequency they are.

Who to believe is up to you.

At the end of the day they are marketing a product,  so who knows?

I saw a guy coming out of Mr. DIY the other day with one. I felt empathy for the fella and thought to myself that I hope he kills every one of the little bastards.

I keep my house pretty tight and I'm good about shutting doors quickly, so they don't get in often. If/when they do I go into full combat mode with a swatter. I hate the mother fcukers more than anything.

When outside and not moving they will be on you within seconds. Seems like they have been heavier than usual lately. Fcuking natures curse.
