It's Friday night I get to my condo turn the light on hear a pop and all the electricity goes. Well the office is closed it's Friday night looks like I'm going to go find a room somewhere for the weekend cuz I need air conditioning. As I'm leaving I go by the shop owned by the lady that did my paperwork when I bought the condo I told her what happened she said hang on a minute she made a phone call 10 minutes later to thai guys show up. I took him up I wasn't expecting a lot to be honest they pulled the panels off the wall found a short in one of the switches one of the guys headed out on the motorbike to get the switch 30 baht. They got back installed it all good. We went back down to the shop that my lady friend owned I bought them a beer each and gave them 500 baht between them they were over the moon. When they left the lady said a hundred baht each would have been fine and I'm sure it would have been. But I was going to go get a hotel room for two nights and then have to pay somebody to fix it anyway come Monday these guys came out 9:00 at night and took care of it did I overtip them in my opinion I undertipped them. It all comes down to nobody telling me how to spend my money and I won't tell anybody how to spend theirs

Good job tipping someone that does a good job.....I always do for sure.....

The guys who installed the new aircon in the condo I am renting.....Left me awe struck with how fast and efficient they worked....

These guys I bet had installed 100s if not 1000s of aircons.......Not single wasted head scratching moment....Wham bam Thank you mam....And the aircon was in and they were done.......

I also gave the guys 500 for a good job, when I did not have too...They were pretty happy....

It's a difficult decision though sometimes isn't it .. I always tip low paying jobs especially the workers that clean windscreens in petrol stations and that sort of thing.

Your Aircon example reminded me of what happened when I checked into The Vogue Hotel just off Lengkee last year.

Got in and did the usual checks and discovered the Aircon wasn't working so called reception for either a new room or a quick fix, so they sent a maintenance bloke up to fix it.

It couldn't have worked for the previous occupier. It couldn't have worked for at least a year! It wasn't just dirty. It had chunks of "carbon" or whatever encrusted inside it that needed to be scraped out!

He spent an hour of scrunching and scraping and finally cleaned it and got it working. Then he stood by the door as if waiting for a tip but I just said Thank You and turned the telly on.

I hadn't even unpacked my toothbrush or sat on the fucking bed and was really fucking pissed off!

Was I wrong ??

No you weren't wrong because you decided how to spend your money. Would I have tipped him yes but that doesn't matter either one of us are wrong we just are different and think about things and consider things differently. If everybody did the same thing the same way how f***d up would this world be

Let them get a job with decent pay. In most of the civilized world tax and services are included.

Yes ! I probably "over tip" here, but when I do it is well worth it. 90 % of it is money well spent and well worth it. The other 10 %, well screw it. American culture.... Fcuk a NY cab drivers most of them are leaches anyway, overcharge, cnuts, and sponges.

Here it is not expected, and when I do it many times they refuse. I'm not just throwing money around and trying to impress. A fraction of them may think that, but most of them appreciated far beyond the money. Like I've said before the payback I get from a decent tip comes back in dividends. As with many things when you do it you give to the individuals who provide the specific service, not the "management".

I guess may best example is the hotel I stay in when in Patts, I spread it around as I see deserving for the amount of time they put in. When I have two waitresses working my table for brekkie I make sure that it goes 50-50 and I do it on the side. Same with the maids. And some of the door guys (they could bail me out of a jam), Over time the balance of genuine appreciation shown is not some throwing weight around it is heartfelt on both sides. Over maybe ten years of staying in the same place and the combination... they treat me like gold. I feel safe and well cared for, at all levels. I can't even come close to determining a money value over all, but it is payback ten times. We've over time (management and staff) developed a strong relationship which contributes immensely to my overall "peace of mind" and comfort.

Another example was back during Covid I would use some motorbike guys from various locations throughout Patts (now here there is no way I would get on one). But over time when you add an extra 10 baht or so... those guys are a network. They talk, they know. The guys especially outside of my condo (VT6) were like a private security force. If some asshole was to fcuk with me they would have backed me up big time Same with the security guys.... what if I had a problem with a visitor or an asshole on the floor. If push came to shove.... those guys would have (and did a couple of times) pull me out of a mess. Can't put a price tag on that.

i once had an owner of a condo I was staying in. the drain was clogged. They had this big wonderful bath tube for frolicking, but the drain diameter was designed too small to handle the water capacity. They had a "plumber come in to clear it. But it didn't need to be cleared because it was simply defective (and they knew it). I finally told the plumber to forget it (poor guy worked his ass off). The next day the owner (from a country you can all probably guess) tried to tell me that I had to pay for the plumber. I told him to fcuk off and walked the next day.

Maybe I am old-fashioned but I was brought up to believe that tips were a reward for good service and in my youth 10% was considered reasonable when dining out - now I have to be careful with debit machines that start automatically at 15% and go way up from there. If some worker's service and attitude impresses me, I don't mind leaving a sizeable tip but I don't like being expected to just because servers have become accustomed to it - the Americans have driven this tipping thing to the point it is today but why should they expect the rest of the world to follow suit? I agree with Glasseye when he makes the point of tipping those he interacts with on a regular basis, this is just good business because they get to know and remember you, but I'm generally not going to leave a big tip for a perfect stranger unless I feel the service they have provided me warrants it.

If you are allowed to open an American bank account Seattle bank and Schwab offer 100 % ATM rebate reimbursements (internationally) on their checking or investment accounts. I have literally saved touhsand$ over the years.

Another trip to Ft.Myers beach there were six of us and being the visitor it was my treat.

The service girl noticed I was from UK so was rude thinking I would not tip.She spilt a

dop of wineover me.When I came to pay I used my card and left no tip.The manager

approached me and asked why.I told him and he said I did not have to.The us Government

wuld have charged her 17 percent of the presumed tip.I do not think she would do that again.
