My next trip in 77 days so I fancy doing a border hop to Vientiane & I'd like to drive up there from Korat.

Can you drive over the border without extra insurance for the vehicle?

Don't think it is simple to do, some paperwork is needed. The link below gives some idea of what to do.

I've done it a number of times on the motorbike. No problems at all assuming the book for your vehicle is in your name or the Mrs. and she is with you.

Once you go through the Immigration you will see a number of insurance agents offices on the right side, stop at any one and buy insurance for however many days you wish to stay in Laos. It

It's not compulsory for you to do so, but i always got 10 days cover when i visited Laos.

I used to travel all over the country, not just stay in Vientiane.

Can you not just park the pick up on the Thai side and go over on foot ?

If Mr. Hog only wants to do a border run and only visit Vientiane then that's an option, there are shuttle buses that go back and forth.

If he wishes to explore further than invite the Sister-in-Law along too.....

Laos is a great country to explore.

It certainly is but….. If you think driving in Thailand is nerve racking, buckle up for a whole new level of white knuckle terror 😲.

I've never found it any worse than Thailand Smiler.

There's far less traffic on the roads, but i will agree that the roads themselves are generally far worse than in Thailand, potholes abound and the further north one goes the worse they get !!

Some of the bridges leave a little to be desired too......

Also mudslides and rock falls are commonplace during the rainy season, but it all adds to the fun, especially when on a motorbike.
