The FDA is probably concerned that all these strange, exotic foods beloved by the evil, sweating farangs don't have enough salt, sugar and MSG in them to meet the strict Thai health and safety standards. <rolleyes>

Most of Saimburis products are what I would call very uncontroversial...

The exception might be their cheese....Not that any of their cheese is controversial per say.......But the fact that they are able to sell very high quality cheese at a amazingly low prices.....

They even put Makro to shame in the cheese department...

So all other stores and their crazy expensive cheese prices might not take kindly to cheep cheese....

I guarantee the FDA cares very little for peoples health worldwide due to the loads of crapola in our food like MSG and Aspartame..

Nope folks.....This is about protecting turf and nothing else and its especially not health related.....

I'm not sure that's the point. You are suggesting some sort of cheese pricing conspiracy but really the FDA shouldn't be concerned about pricing.

I wonder if the issue, or non-issue, is prepared foods such as pies, cornish pasties, scotch eggs and the like. No doubt the packaging should be labelled in accordance with FDA regs. But are there expat pastry chefs making this stuff in their kitchens?

Well how about Big  C Extras Deli and bakery.....They sell LOADS of prepackaged meals, deserts, sandwich, baked stuff bla bla....Hey I will bet big that all that stuff  has not been individually approved by the FDA....

I didn't say individually approved. I said labelled in accordance with FDA regs. I might rush down to BigC in november to check the labelling.

thanks to everyone for the info,

reading between the lines it looks like a lot of stuff is going to be off the shelves in future.

I guess Siamburi has good connections. Either the good connections are now not so good and they are closed completely or, and this is more optimistic,  just a few stuff are off the shelves.

I used to regularly buy, amongst other things, their large packs of smoked salmon off cuts. I would drive up from Bangsaray on a Saturday morning just to visit their shop.

They also quite often had one/off favourite items from the UK which were available for a couple of days or so but always sold out very quickly.

Speculating here, but I wonder if Big C has an FDA approved food prep/kitchen area, thus they can sell products produced in house. The same might now be required of Siamburi's, thus the closure for renovations.

Yes mate, when it first moved up there (and I was capable of walking up that hill!!) I remember there being a toilet door next to the kitchen door, but then they expanded the shopfloor area. I have no idea where that toilet is now ... surely not a door directly onto the kitchen..

What is the current law on the number of doors required between commercial food preparation areas and a shithouse .. ???

Someone said on another forum Siamburys is still closed as of today..

I am planning on doing my monthly order for delivery the first full week in October...

Let's see how it goes ..nothing produced by  "Siamburi's" is on the list ..

EDIT = "Siamburi’s opened up January 2016 and has been very popular. Since opening, they have expanded the shop in size three times due to developing the product range and customer demand. The shop now measures over 90m2 ..... "

I think a whole lot of the stuff Siambury carries could be found on Lazada or Shopee cheaper......

But the cheese....Nope.....The cheese is the star of the show there.....No where else comes close to their selection or cheap prices.....Unless you want to buy a massive 2-3-4 kilo chunk of cheese from Makro.......
