Gut Problems (Parasites)

I have often mentioned how effective yogurt (probiotics) are at helping to bring gut bacteria back into balance.

But recently I was thinking about things besides bad bacteria that can get into our system besides shitty bacteria.   Parasites

Anyone ever have to contend with such things ?

Perhaps we can use this thread as gut problem central. Horror stories, remedies, etc.

You think you have Parasites?  Never even remotely had anything close to this.....good lord!

Sometimes you wouldn't even know.

Once saw an autopsy video. They pulled a three foot worm out of the kids guts. He was 13 and had been shot in the head.

As a CLS (clinical laboratory scientist) I really didn't see many positive specimens for parasites in the US aside from pinworms in kids, however in the Middle East dealing with patients from the ME and Asia I saw a lot.  In fact I was infected with Giardia while working there, but that parasite is very common in the West. Havre Montana has recently had an outbreak as has Whitehorse, Yukon with a contaminated well.

I live here and hadn't heard of this before, but then again I don't follow the local news like I used to; apparently the presence of giardia was discovered during routine testing and did not cause any sickness in the local population:

Milwaukee made the news back in 1993 when cryptosporidium got into the city's water supply. I lived in the suburbs which had their own water supply, so avoided getting sick. Going into the city though, wherever you went, all the public water fountains (we call them bubblers) were covered.

For a lot of people, that cured them of the desire to ever again drink tap water.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1993_Milwaukee_cryptosporidiosis_outbreak

MacKenzie et al. and the CDC showed that this outbreak was caused by Cryptosporidium oocysts that passed through the filtration system of one of the city's water-treatment plants, arising from a sewage treatment plant's outlet two miles upstream in Lake Michigan. This abnormal condition at the water purification plant lasted from March 23 through April 8, after which, the plant was shut down. Over the span of approximately two weeks, 403,000[11] of an estimated 1.61 million residents in the Milwaukee area (of which 880,000 were served by the malfunctioning treatment plant) became ill with the stomach cramps, fever, diarrhea and dehydration caused by the pathogen.[11] After the outbreak, cryptosporidiosis antibody rates among Milwaukee children reached 80%, compared to only 10% prior to the outbreak.[12] Deaths have been attributed to this outbreak, mostly among the elderly and immunocompromised people, such as people with AIDS.[1]

I am slowly recalling this story after reading your post.

Typically Lake Michagin water is very good (as I am sure you well know). But the intake pipes need to be far enough offshore. Sometimes certain conditions can exist that allow contaminants to get in, in which case you have a major problem on your hands.

403,000 that were affected. Wow !   and that was just what was reported. Jesus

Yep,

I got an infection in the Philippines back in 2004. Unpleasant to say the least.

It started off with eating pancit (noodles) with liver which turned out to be not only undercooked, but rancid (the soy sauce / vinegar combo added to it covered the taste and smell). I was pretty ill, had worms in my stools to begin with (yes, I always check before flushing) and at the worst stage of it (about 3 days after initial infection) I was vomiting up bile with live worms mixed in with it.

The Mrs knew something was a bit wrong, so I was admitted to hospital, given all manner of expensive drugs and came out 1 and a half stone lighter a week after I went in.

The irony of all of this was that my Mrs thought I was the subject of a black magic curse, because earlier in that morning an elderly woman was begging and I ignored her (not deliberately I might add).

Since that day I can't face noodles, not even Pad Thai.
