Butch Posted November 22, 2024 Posted November 22, 2024 Although the headlines read as "suspected", it's a very sad and tragic set of events. https://edition.cnn.com/2024/11/21/asia/australia-backpacker-dies-methanol-poisoning-laos-intl-hnk/index.html https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/ced94znq424o I've often wondered that, given all the fake booze floating around pattaya, especially from the "cocktail cars" that this doesn't happen more often. Sad to see young lives lost, a tragic waste and the families must be suffering terribly. 1 6
Spyder Posted November 22, 2024 Posted November 22, 2024 I flew in from Laos on Tuesday, I never heard this mentioned over their! very shocking to see how young the victims are. I stick to beer, more difficult to mess with, especially bottled. 1 3

I always give the top a wipe with a tissue though, in case a rat has pissed on the box or over the bottle to lessen the chance of picking up Weils disease / Leptospirosis. Whether or not it does any good, I've no idea but it's a habit I'm into now. 1 2

I have avoided commenting on this thread because 6 young people have died but having read your replies I feel it is OK to give my opinion. Decades ago before GSM and in some cases before any mobile communication and definitely before the internet, backpackers would travel the world with nothing but a Lonely Planet guide . Sure bad things happened but young travelers today are spoon fed so much information preceding their journey it ceases to be an adventure but more about ticking boxes. How the hell did they think it was OK to drink ..or am I being unfair ??? If they were my children I'd be distraught at losing them at such a young age. RIP Young people ! 3

Butch Posted November 29, 2024 Author Posted November 29, 2024 Interesting article in the Guardian about the town the incident happened in. Seems to be a fair bit of denial locally. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2024/nov/29/laos-backpacker-deaths-vang-vieng-ntwnfb
