Has anyone used them before? I've heard they are a decent airline

The reason I am asking is because they are offering very reasonable fares for Jan/ Feb '25. Sure its a longer flight from LHR to Hong Kong but generally a short stop over before flying on to BKK.

Am tempted to book with them but wondering if anyone else has made that journey or flown with them before?

They are always in the top airline awards

is the saving significant enough to spend longer travelling than choosing a more direct route .. 🤷‍♂️

It is for me to buy duty free tobacco saving a lot of money compared to UK. It's about another hour and a half on the plane to Hong Kong but I will be in no hurry . The inbound at BKK looks like a reasonable time in the day

Not sure yet, but Emirates, who I usually fly with have stopped up the same flight as I had in September by well over £200.

As a poor pensioner, these things matter, especially when my hotel have hiked up the price per night during this period.

Don't have to book yet but thinking of flying out 21st or 22nd January and generally look at airfares on Skyscanner in advance. I guess it's considered mid season, after Xmas and new year from mid January

The ratings in that link look good for CP

I flew with them must be at least 5 years ago, can't remember anything about the experience so I am guessing it was ok.

Have you tried searching 1st week in February? Flights tend to be cheaper then although it has to be said I am usually going back to blighty at that time and not, as you will be, the other way.

Interested to hear how you get on as I hope to be flying end of Jan/early Feb 2025. Having Xmas in the UK for the first time in ages because my old mum wants a family one. I haven't even started to look at prices for 2025 yet....

Well, I have just seen a flight Jan 23rd to 17th Feb with Thai Aiways direct at £716 on Skyscanner. Can still get some duty free in BKK I suppose.

I just book it later and be done with it. Not a fan of Thai economy class with those hard seats, but 11 hkurs, with a few vodkas and a sleeping tablet, goes fairly quickly I guess

Good flying times and afternoon arrival at BKK more or less the same as EVA, although their prices seem to be £100 more for the same dates.

Depends a bit on when Chinese New Year exactly is. After tends to be cheaper.

I've flown with them (AMS - HKG - HAN and vv.) and I would fly with them again without any problems. The transfer in HKG involved security and passport check.

Most noteworthy was that while I was loading the luggage into the automated luggage handling system at Schiphol (after self check in at home) a lady wearing the uniform of Cathay Pacific requested to see the passports. I handed her the four Dutch passports we were travelling on. She was a bit surprised that only one passport had a visum for Viet Nam and asked how we thought to enter our final destination without visa. After I handed her three Vietnamese passports, she understood completely and wished us a pleasant flight.

Read somewhere that Thailand is closing all inbound duty free shops. Not sure if that has happened yet but worth checking if expecting to pick some items on arrival.

Yes, it's already happened sadly.

I flew with them multiple times but a long time ago and they were a pretty good airline.

They were owned by the British Swires family and a family member, Matt Swires owned and ran the Chequers (or was it Jools ?) bar in Soi 4 Sukhumvit Bangkok for many years - I'd imagine he would be long gone, maybe passed on as well.

Again this was long ago.

I flew them last year and had no issues. Flying them again in March next year. I would highly recommend them. Their economy class has slightly more legroom.

Another positive for me is that they fly the A350 aircraft on most routes. It is very modern and comfortable.

Do they serve throughout the flight?? Last time I flew with them yonks ago there was nothing for the final 6 hours or so ..

I last flew with Thai 2 years ago, and I can't remember. I know that I just went up to the galley and asked for alcolic beverages  but I think I slept for the last part of the flight. Seats were rock hard. Wouldn't advice it for anyone suffering with "farmers" 😁

I was a long time American Airlines "One World" member. As such I flew frequently on CX and had good experiences, Since retiring (2017) my "One World " points are pretty much used up. My CX experiences have gone down hill. I no longer use them and prefer EVA and JAL. My experiences to LOS are from North America,

After years of flying premium economy with EVA from Vancouver, I was unable to complete a reservation in late 2019 and was told by an EVA rep that they had changed to 787's out of YVR and no longer offered PE on that flight, so decided to try PE in Cathay Pacific instead which came in at the same price; thanks to Covid I ended up flying home with Korean Air but was grateful to get a quick refund from CP for the unused portion of my ticket.

I flew with them once more before finding out that EVA had resumed PE from YVR with a change back to 777's so I have returned to EVA, which I find the better airline - better cabins in PE, better service, and easier transfer to next gate in Taipei - every time I've gone through HKG it seems to be a mile or more to the next gate with little time in-between. I'm looking forward to my next EVA flight on January 8.

We used to fly them all the time to the PI, had a couple of business class upgrades with Marco Polo points.

A very good, slick and efficient operation, decent Aircraft and overall very good. Not the cheapest out there, and the PE is good but not on par with EVA but as @maipenrai said, Cathay lacks a bit in their PE offering, but I've not flown them for a while so they may have upped their game.

The usual caveat applies and it's been mentioned, Hong Kong is massive, absolutely huge and a decent amount of time is needed for gate transfers.

Assuming you haven't booked yet, there are many YT videos comparing Cathay Pacific economy and PE seating, and where it ranks or compares with other airlines for value and amenities. Plus seatguru.com can give you a seat map of all the Cathay aircraft they would use for such a flight, to include certain "bad seats" to avoid, especially in economy, and compare with other carriers.

Good luck.

It was Jools, with Kim Fletcher running the bar,now running Fletcher's Folly on the dark side.

I used to hang around with Matty Swire in the 80's & keep in touch occasionally.

Before Covid he was working on a cruise ship in the Carib & spending his time off in Jomtien, which is where I last met him.

I did talk to him on FB during Covid & he was in London.
