It could be the phone senses a better connection using mobile access instead of WiFi and is making the decision for you to use mobile data. The solution would be to disable mobile data until you need it. That would also be a sure way of stopping the drain of money on your phone.

I always turn my mobile data off, unless i absolutely need it, ie when WiFi is not available. Simple push of a button on or off, just as is WiFi, flight mode, Bluetooth and ring volume etc.

That eliminates any crossover

I use a Samsung Galaxy A15. Basic phone

Invariably, in Pattaya, WiFi is everywhere in hotels, bars and restaurants although often if it is somewhere you have not visited, you may need to ask for the password.

By having the feature turned off, it's a simple case of switching it back to mobile data use on for the times when free WiFi is not available, thus avoiding mobile data usage and charges, ie when on a baht bus, going for a walk, ordering a Bolt taxi etc and so on.

Don't rely on what you think is an automatic switch. Just turn off Mobile Data, when not required.

These days, I don't even bother with buying a Thai Sim. I use WhatsApp to make calls, message and send/recieve data. Of course not everyone uses WhatsApp but Line is a useful  alternative too to have installed

These SIM card package deals that you can buy at the airport are a rip off IMO and are often time limited.

Free WiFi at the Airport on arrival for 1 hr. Keeps me in touch with my driver via WhatsApp.

Quite likely. It's best just to keep if off and use the free WiFi from the bar.  Virtually all bars and restaurants have free WiFi these days. I just hand my phone to a bar girl and she will enter their password. Their WiFi is automatically recognised by the phone .  Then it's free for the time I'm there and using their establishment. Occasionally they might not have a strong signal and that's  when you may chose to switch to  your package Mobile Data, but these occurancies are few and far between in my experience. Same goes for hotel room. I would imagine that all decent hotels have WiFi these days. It has become bog standard and included in the price.

What are the details of your 200 baht package?  If it includes mobile data you shouldn't be getting charged for it seperately.  Have you let the package expire at all recently without topping up in advance, as then it would use any credit for mobile data at non-package rates?

I don't know what package you have, other than it costs 200 Baht.

What provider (AIS?), for how many days and what speed?

AIS for example has a 30 day internet package that includes 30 GB of data and unlimited internet at a speed of 15 Mbps. This should last for a while unless you have some features activated which are draining the data.

Best would be to go to one of the provider shops and get their comments why this is happening.

Difficult to give advice here on the forum.

I had a similar issue with my phone, so one day I took it into True to see about a different plan. She said I had a good plan already so I told her what was going on. Evidently, I got enrolled in some subscription, probably through a scammy text of some kind. She unenrolled me and my phone is back to rarely needing more money.

Best of luck with that …..I remember I had just moved for a new job around 2015, and was just on a cheap Samsung phone with a prepaid plan with limited minutes & 300 MB (YES) of data monthly ……Now Canada has always been known for having little competition amongst phone providers, compared to USA & Europe but at least on a post-paid even back then they gave you at least 4 MB or so

Within 3 months or so I switched to a proper plan with an IPhone 6S, and have been a proud, exclusively Apple slut since then . Also our government stepped in somewhat, data is given away like candy now , Mom had a cheap LG for 5 years & last year said f—k it….We pay like ~ 3,000 THB a month for her huge Samsung A23, IPhone 14, AND 25 GB each…..with ZERO deposit too. Was NOT like that 5-10 years ago, but consumers had enough I guess, I find what we pay very reasonable , companies still need to make a $ or 2

But I chuckle when I remember that 300 MB limit, was working 12 hour days, and no free time, so I find a massage clip of a chesty Asian girl , enjoy the viewing , less than 10 minutes and boom ! There went my data allowance for a bloody month! Times have changed

I haven’t been in Thailand going on 13 years now , but I remember AIS 1-2 Call was always easy to deal with. Again data usage/social media  wasn’t really a thing like today, but I remember 100-200 THB prepaid packages lasting so long….Just had to do a bit of homework on what fitted my needs. Was always impressed that incoming calls was always free, wasn’t like that back home for sure

BUT it seems like while contracts /postpaid was not common, surely things have changed ? Cannot see many Thais having 70,000 laying around for the best IPhone, no ?
