Skyscanner.net or Kayak.co.uk are great tools to compare prices , but I usually go to the Airline's website once I have decided on my dates

Exactly this.

If you book direct with the airline, then you have much more of a chance for sorting any changes or issues that may arise.

Lower price isn't always the best here!

Ever since Covid i always book direct with the airline.

For peace of mind, and also because there's 3 of us, and you can always book seats together at time of booking with the airline, while many of the agents you can't, or must pay extra for that anyway.

I concur.

I use Skyscanner to check flight prices, but once I have noted my preferred dates, airline, I then go direct to the airline website.

I recently costed (via Skyscanner) a London - Manila - Bangkok - London schedule. Agents were offering the best price but I booked the flights via the airlines concerned.

I have always felt it better to book direct with the airline due to ownership when things go wrong.

I once booked a London Bangkok flight through an agent, there was a problem at Heathrow and I was told to call the agent. I got that sorted but if overseas, the need to call your agent isn't so straight forward.

I also have friends who have fallen foul of 'call your agent', when stuck overseas.

Of course if you want the cheapest deals they are usually cheaper through an agent. Your choices but you take your chances.

I thought it best to book direct but when I did with Thai it took 4 years to get my money back when they cancelled the flights.

Was that during Covid, did they offer a voucher. What was in their message to you about their cancellation.

Your experience shouldn't be the normal actions of an airline who cancels a flight due to their needs or was the cancellation due your voluntary action.

You should have been offered a list of options.

A 4 year wait shouldn't be one of their options during normal operations.

Depends a bit on where you are located. From the Netherlands (and neighbouring countries) there is a reliable agent I can recommend, otherwise see previous recommendations.

I booked before covid, the flights were during covid. The lack of communication was appalling. I know others who booked via an agency and got refunded immediately.

I know some airlines were offering vouchers to be used at a later time. BA had problems with many wanting a full refund, the amount of payment against what they were bringing in in revenue was a problem and some airlines were slow at offering refunds even if they agreed to repay.

I think it was because Thai Air were also going through a bankruptcy and big upheaval at that time as well. Had it not been the Thai National Airline and huge loss of face, they could well have went under.

They're still not the same, no London Office you can contact like before, stuff like employing UK people to run their UK social media, i even won football tickets at Wembley via one of the many competitions they run then.

I remember seeing many, many people complain about cancelled flights and no contact much less refunds at that time with Thai. Thankfully mine was booked direct with EVA, refund no problem.

But they're more stable now, i book them regular, and have no worries doing so.

I use Google flights to find the best dates to fly.  I book direct with the airline.  This trip from Los Angeles I selected ANA  (All Nippon Airlines) as ANA is the only one I found to fly the 787 Dreamliner both legs.     LA to Japan, Japan to BKK ....I can't wait, wheels up in April just in time for the last day of Songkran 😝💦

I once lost 70K baht for two return flights from Bangkok to the UK for Sai and I from an Agent in Pattaya Tai who closed up walking off with my money. Having booked flights previously with the same Agent I had no reason to believe there might be a problem.

After that I always booked flights direct with the Airline.
