Bazle Posted February 3 Posted February 3 ...... some difficulties could be on the horizon. "On February 1st, 2025, Deputy Government Spokesperson Karom Polpornklang announced that the government is stepping up security by “Cleaning Mobile Banking” for mobile banking to curb mule accounts used in financial crimes. Under the new rules, the name on a mobile banking account must match the registered SIM card owner. Banks will notify users if discrepancies are found, and affected customers must verify their identity at mobile service centers by April 30th, 2025. Failure to do so will result in being locked out of your mobile banking and possibly entire account, warn banks. A previous cleanup effort in late 2024 reviewed over 120 million phone numbers, categorizing them into three groups: M (Matching): 75.8 million numbers (63.02%) where names align. N (Non-Matching): 30.9 million numbers (25.68%) requiring updates for mostly foreign users or those with mismatched details. P (Pending Verification): 13.5 million numbers (11.29%) with incomplete SIM ownership records. Users in groups N and P will receive in-app notifications from their banks between February 1st and 28th. Those failing to update their details within 90 days risk having their mobile banking services temporarily suspended. Certain exceptions apply, including government agencies, corporate accounts, and individuals with legal constraints. The government urges users to check their status through banking apps and comply with the verification process. If no notification is received, mobile banking services remain unaffected." https://thepattayanews.com/2025/02/02/thailand-cracks-down-on-mule-accounts-with-new-mobile-banking-rules-thousands-of-foreigners-affected/
forcebwithu Posted February 3 Posted February 3 Not sure where the difficulty will come in. Banks will notify us if there's a problem and a trip to your mobile provider to update their records will resolve the issue. 1 4

Krapow Posted February 3 Posted February 3 And if you don't have a mobile banking app, just online banking? 1

Unsure didn't think to ask as I was just checking to make sure I was okay. It makes sense if you have the banking app obviously that phone number is registered to that bank account. 2

As long as the registered phone number the bank has to send you the codes and messages is in your name. You are fine. It was many years ago now that you needed to show your passport to get a Thai Sim, so most people will be ok. I just got a new passport, so updated mine with AIS this trip. 2
Toy Boy Posted February 4 Posted February 4 From what I've read, it mainly affects people who bought multiple sim's and registered them in different names. I guess that must have been in the days before you had to have a passport associated with your sim card. Or do some people have multiple passports these days, lol? Again, as far as I've read, it's only about the name on your passport matching the name the sim is registered under, you don't need to inform the phone company every time you get a new passport. Unless you changed your name, lol. 2

Ever since Covid, we don't keep a Thai sim any longer than the holiday, just get a new AIS at Swampy each time. So, of course the sim we have each time in Thailand will be registered to us, but only for that time or slightly longer until it's invalidated. I asked the missus did her bank (SCB) say anything to her last month when she was there, she said, no, just asked what her number was, it was the one she just got at Swampy a day before. Obviously registered to her, but 'new'. Because i read in the news article above they did the same 'procedure' end of last year. My experience with Thai banks can be stressful, as my Trip Reports in VIP can attest! 1 1
KWA Posted February 4 Posted February 4 Kasikorn starting the process on 17th February. Users who started using mobile banking services since 2022 and whose name on the SIM doesn't match will be affected. 3
Horizondave Posted February 4 Posted February 4 I registered a new Sim for a new phone in Sep '23, then went to Kasikorn to let them know the new number so I could access my account on the app on the phone. As I have the same number valid till Jan next year I am assuming it won't affect me. I will be popping in to see them in July as I have two accounts. I have access to my Hua Hin account on my phone, I informed the agent that I also have a Khon Kaen account to which he said I could set that account on my app later. Of course, I believed him, but on arriving back in the UK, I keep getting a message that I need to visit a Bank to add it. Funnily in my investment portfolio, I can see the amount of money in the Khon Kaen account but can not utilize the account online for payment, transfers etc. 1 1

As far as i'm aware i don't use K PLUS, LINE BK, or MAKE by KBank, and i don't have an app. So hopefully none of this applies to me, and no drama next time in Kasikorn in July, as i have to go see them, update them with my new UK Passport. I just logged on and a pop up said about downloading a K BIZ App, but didn't say compulsory or anything. It also said 'Foreign customers cannot use the KBIZ App yet, but can KBIZ website normally. So hopefully when in July if they mention it, we'll just explain we don't want it, only come twice a year for 3 weeks, have a new sim each time so it would be a problem, and just personally don't want it!

Believe it or not my experience with Thai banks over the past few years has been much more trouble free than dealing with U.S. banks. When you are a regular here and wave the proper docs at the beginning stage you are in like flint. 1
Bazle Posted April 28 Author Posted April 28 (edited) https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/general/3012266/checks-underway-on-700-000-thai-mobile-phone-numbers-of-foreigners PUBLISHED : 27 Apr 2025 at 12:59 Checks underway on 700,000 Thai mobile phone numbers of foreigners Only numbers registered since Jan 1, 2022 affected; banks will contact users for verification Authorities will verify the names of foreign subscribers of 700,000 mobile phone numbers before deciding whether to terminate their mobile banking services in Thailand in June, according to the minister of digital economy and society (DES). DES Minister Prasert Jantararuangtong said the mobile phone numbers had been registered since Jan 1, 2022. About 700,000 mobile phone numbers registered to foreigners in Thailand together with about 1.8 million mobile phone numbers that had not been registered to anyone would be checked, he said. According to the minister, the government requires the names of mobile banking service users and the names of subscribers of mobile phone numbers attached to the mobile banking services to be identical in order to curb technology crime. Otherwise, the mobile banking services will be terminated. The measure was introduced on Feb 1 and mobile banking service users were required to comply with the rule by April 30 (this Wednesday). Otherwise, mobile banking services on improperly registered phones will be terminated in June. Banks concerned would inform such phone users and ask them to adjust their registration data accordingly by April 30. Those who did not receive such a request from their banks via their mobile banking services could continue to use the services without any problem, Mr Prasert said. Edited April 28 by Bazle 2
Yesitisdakid Posted April 28 Posted April 28 Anyone having their phone number that they have now before 2022 seems to not be bothered by this I think many here probably are in that position of having their number for years before 2022. But those that don't this may be a small problem 1 2
