I heard a rumour a few days ago that, if you have an AIS SIM card but it isn't up-to-date, you will lose the service later in the year.

It sounded unlikely, but I wanted to check it out as I shall be helpless to handle the situation if it happens when I am out of the country. So, this afternoon, I bit the bullet and went to the AIS shop in Central Festival. The wait could have been worse, only about 30 minutes. I explained my query, but the girl didn't understand as she fiddled around with my phone, and then told me when my data package expires!

I tried again, more successfully. To abbreviate the story, she used her tablet computer to take a picture of me, then a picture of my passport (which I had to sign on the screen), and then replaced my existing SIM card with a new one. I asked what would have happened if I had not visited the shop, but was unable to comprehend the answer.

However, there is probably a clue as to what this is all about in the text messages on my phone - identity checking:

I am guessing that there is some sort of code in the new SIM that indicates that I have been ID-checked; anyone not ID-checked will lose the service later. It is most likely connected with bringing down the call centre scams.

Maybe it is also connected with banking - see thread:

If anyone more knowledgeable about these matters can elaborate, please do so.

I am surprised that this has not been more publicised. I wonder if @tommy dee has mentioned it on his news broadcasts.

My Mrs who is Thai did the exact same thing and they also gave her a new SIM at AIS

I went to DTAC to do mine and nothing needed changing as it was all up to date.

It's been going on for a few months,  when I registered my new passport,  they did similar,  but didn't change my SIM.

My SIM has always been registered to my passport since they changed that rule many years ago.

It's all to do with the scam centres and 1000s of Sim cards in the system that are not registered to a single person.

Your registered phone number with your bank has to have the same passport registered on your SIM.

Been reported in the news many times.

They just been told to enforce the rules I guess.

Fwiw, I visited dtac in Central this morning.  Unfortunately the English speaking assistant didn't understand exactly what I was asking, but did confirm that my passport was already registered to my number. What she couldn't/wouldn't say was what would happen if it wasn't.

What she did offer was a letter confirming that my number was registered to my passport to present to my bank (or agent) for visa renewal. I should have taken it, but declined as I don't know if these are time sensitive and my visa isn't due for renewal until April '26.

Mobile Banking Shake-Up: Thai Users Face Security Check Deadline

MONDAY, APRIL 28, 2025

Authorities order identity verification to combat online fraud, affecting accounts registered since 2022

Thai mobile banking users are being urged to verify their identity by April 30th as part of a government crackdown on online fraud.

Deputy Prime Minister and Digital Economy and Society Minister Prasert Jantararuangtong announced the measures, which require those flagged by banks via their mobile apps to confirm their details.

Failure to do so could lead to account restrictions.

The move, spearheaded by the Technology Crime Suppression Committee, aims to ensure that mobile banking usernames match the registered owners of the corresponding mobile phone SIM cards.

This is seen as a crucial step in hindering criminals who exploit discrepancies in user information.

The first phase of the account verification process, overseen by the Anti-Money Laundering Office (AMLO), involves banks checking user phone numbers against mobile network operator records.

Users are being categorised based on whether their details match (Y), no registration is found (P), or the information doesn't match the mobile banking user (N).

Those in categories P and N who registered since 2022 must update their information by the April 30th deadline.

Prasert clarified Sunday that customers whose mobile banking username doesn't match their SIM card owner details, but who haven't received a notification, can continue using their accounts as normal for now.

The directive primarily affects two groups who opened accounts since 2022: those whose phone number registration doesn't match their mobile banking details, and foreign nationals whose phone number owner details don't align with their mobile banking username.

The second phase, commencing after April 30th, will see banks provide updated user data to mobile operators for further verification.

In May, around 2.5 million accounts – those with a 'P' status (approximately 1.8 million) and foreign nationals with an 'N' status (around 700,000) who registered since January 1st, 2022 – will be re-checked.

I've had this phone number for 25 years won't affect me

Same here. Only those new to Thailand in the last three years will have a few hoops to jump through. I don't see it as a big deal, other than probably a small mountain of documents to sign.

I updated a new DTAC phone number with my bank in mid 2023, so I suppose I should be getting some notification.

I have paid to keep my mobile number going, but I haven't physically used it as it is in my phone on disabled mode.

Have looked on my Kasikorn Bank App but no notifications there. I will be going into the bank in late July when in Thailand.

I’m in much the same position. I can’t remember when I got my new number but I’m thinking it was Covid time and I think my wife’s daughter bought and registered it. My online Kasikorn worked last weekend so it’s a case and wait and see for me as well.

We are in Thailand mid July so will sort them both phone sim ( carry on as normal / replace or update contact detail  with passport etc) and also head into kasikorn to sort the app out.

lets see

If you want to check the registration of your AIS SIM, dial *161# followed by Call and you'll get a message back similar to this.  Translated means your phone is registered to ID ending 2625 (in my case) which is the last 4 digits of my passport number.

I understand there's a way to update it without visiting a shop too.  I can look it out if anyone wants to try it.

Just checked my number and it came back with my expired passport number. I'll wait until things stop working before I deal with long lines, long waits, and multiple pages of documents to sign to update my passport number.

I think it can be done from your handset too although never done it myself and it seems too simple.  Try sending an SMS containing your passport number to 170 and see what happens.

It's like with the cops, I don't volunteer info and only answer direct queries.

I have three bank accounts, two of which the mobile app is working just fine. K-Bank stopped working when I upgraded to a new phone over a year ago and I'll be damned if I can figure out how to get it to work on the new phone, short of a trip into one of the branch offices.

I also have website access to two of my bank accounts; used to be three until SCB dropped support of website banking.

So even if one or all of my mobile bank apps stop working, I still have ATM and website access.

I'm just thankful i have always declined Kasikorn's offer in Branch to download and use their App.

ATM card works just fine for me.

I believe a visit to the branch is required if you transfer the App onto a different phone, where you will have to prove ID.

Fairly basic, but effective anti fraud measures.

It's more about the phone number registered on your bank account having the same ID assigned to it as the bank account.

If it doesn't,  then there is a risk of both your phone sim and bank accounts being shut down.

Both me and my wife just get a new SIM at Swampy each trip. I've no idea what, if any number is assigned to it, i don't remember ever being asked. Though obviously i have to show passports when buying them at the airport.

I read it an 'mobile banking' and assumed it was the App.

Hopefully when i go to Kasikorn in July to update with my new passport if will be uneventful.

Just logged on to my account, seems fine and normal, no pop up messages or anything.

I have thought about it, well, i did when the first 'round' happened about 9 months ago or whatever. But nothing happened.

We used to keep our SIM's, but when covid happened, they went out of date, and the only phone booth we seen first trip back was AIS, which are not as easy to keep for longer while not in use, as say dtac, as we did ask them. Then we just kept using AIS, as like this trip, it will be a year since the last, so new SIM. I like going to Lapland as well, and only so much A/L.

I get money paid into my Kasikorn every month as i rent my wee condo in Pattaya, so can see it's still open and normal, showing the money deposited.

I might have the conversation with the bank when there in July, see what they say. If need be i can buy dtac SIMs for both of us, my wife's account is with SCB, then just top them up and keep them 'valid', easier to do than AIS in my experience. Though she was in Thailand in Dec/Jan when her mum passed, had no problems with her account either, i did think about it and ask her.

Just wait and see, if no issues July, i'm leaving it the way it is.

This changing the numbers on a new passport is a real drag....I see no reason for it other than to make life more complicated..

It makes total sense that your proof of identification that allows you to use such services is kept up to date.

Most passports last several years, many 10 years, so it's not like it's a regular inconvenience methinks!

Just put my passport in my backpack....

Getting ready for a monster walk down to the Big C. I believe True has an office there (or at least I may pass one on the way).

I will check with them upon arrival (after I change my drenched shirt) and see if there is anything I need to do.

I hope the staff there is a bit more friendly than the idiot I dealt with in HH.
