Strong earthquake rocks Thai capital of Bangkok, prompting evacuations from swaying buildings

A strong 7.7 magnitude earthquake rocked the Thai capital Friday, causing buildings to sway.

Germany’s GFZ center for geosciences said the midday temblor was a shallow 10 kilometers, with an epicenter in neighboring Myanmar, according to temporary reports.

There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

The greater Bangkok area is home to more than 17 million people, many of whom live in high-rise apartments.

Startled residents poured out of high-rise condominiums and hotels in densely populated central Bangkok. They remained in the streets, seeking shade from the midday sun in the minutes after the quake.

The quake was forceful enough to send water sloshing out of pools, some high up in high-rises, as the tremor shook.

Many buildings were evacuated as they swayed in the rare quake.

The epicenter of the earthquake was in central Myanmar, about 50 kilometers (30 miles) east of the city of Monywa. There were no immediate reports of the effect of the earthquake in Myanmar, which is in the middle of a civil war.

I went down to Vasu after I'd had a shower & I've never seen so many people on the streets.

Changed some dosh then went across Suk to BKK Bank but it was shut.

Easily the most moving crap I've ever had....

You know most buildings here are probably not built to a standard to withstand a large magnitude earthquake. I expect there will be many building that after inspection will probably be flagged as uninhabitable due to quake caused structural damage. Then again, TIT.

Hospital 10 minutes walk from my condo has had to be evacuated.

Just saw it on Thai PBS. The poor patients, it's around 35 degrees out there today.

Also heard from an evacuee that my local Bangkok Bank has aquired an external crack in the base of the building. Numerous reports of debris on major roads, including again Rama II going down to Hua Hin (where the crane collasped recently) a section of the road has now sunk there.

Have seen several photos from Myanmar, looks terrible😟

Will wander out after 5 and see what the situations is like.

An old mate from the Oman just posted me this, kind of puts it in perspective:

[28/03/2025, 16:24:28] BobbyBill: Jules and I were in the epicentre of an earthquake in the Philippines ages ago. 3000 killed saw things that were just horrible
[28/03/2025, 16:27:14] BobbyBill: Was 1990

Jules is his son who must've been very young then.

Felt here in Phuket too, but relatively minor compared to Bkk which is much closer to North Myanmar epicentre.

Phuket is very far away....I am surprised anyone felt it there...

I am in a condo 6th floor Pattaya and felt nothing at all....
