forcebwithu Posted March 28 Posted March 28 At 7.7 it's a big one. Strong earthquake rocks Thai capital of Bangkok, prompting evacuations from swaying buildings A strong 7.7 magnitude earthquake rocked the Thai capital Friday, causing buildings to sway. Germany’s GFZ center for geosciences said the midday temblor was a shallow 10 kilometers, with an epicenter in neighboring Myanmar, according to temporary reports. There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties. The greater Bangkok area is home to more than 17 million people, many of whom live in high-rise apartments. Startled residents poured out of high-rise condominiums and hotels in densely populated central Bangkok. They remained in the streets, seeking shade from the midday sun in the minutes after the quake. The quake was forceful enough to send water sloshing out of pools, some high up in high-rises, as the tremor shook. Many buildings were evacuated as they swayed in the rare quake. The epicenter of the earthquake was in central Myanmar, about 50 kilometers (30 miles) east of the city of Monywa. There were no immediate reports of the effect of the earthquake in Myanmar, which is in the middle of a civil war. 2
Popular Post Painter Posted March 28 Popular Post Posted March 28 Pilot has just made announcement. We have to hold on the taxiway for 10 to 20 minutes. Earthquake has caused air traffic control to evacuate the control tower.... until they return we're stuck. Muggins of course is on the hot side of the plane... 'Spose it's better excuse than fire in a substation.... 1 7

forcebwithu Posted March 28 Posted March 28 Another temblor 12 minutes after the first one. https://edition.cnn.com/world/live-news/myanmar-thailand-earthquake-03-28-25-intl-hnk/index.html Myanmar hit by 6.4-magnitude aftershock From Edward Szekeres Myanmar was hit by a second strong earthquake, of 6.4-magnitude, near the town of Sagaing around 12 minutes after the initial quake hit on Friday afternoon, according to the United States Geological Survey. 2
Lemondropkid Posted March 28 Posted March 28 Just had an after shock, minor compared with the main event. Sky train closed, roads jammed and lots of confused people 1
coxyhog Posted March 28 Author Posted March 28 I went down to Vasu after I'd had a shower & I've never seen so many people on the streets. Changed some dosh then went across Suk to BKK Bank but it was shut. Easily the most moving crap I've ever had.... 1

forcebwithu Posted March 28 Posted March 28 (edited) Live view of people in the street in Bangkok. Edited to add: Now showing quake damage in the Bangkok area. Edited March 28 by forcebwithu
forcebwithu Posted March 28 Posted March 28 You know most buildings here are probably not built to a standard to withstand a large magnitude earthquake. I expect there will be many building that after inspection will probably be flagged as uninhabitable due to quake caused structural damage. Then again, TIT. 1 2
coxyhog Posted March 28 Author Posted March 28 From The Nation: JUST-IN: Air Traffic Control has issued a nationwide NO-FLY order for all airports in Thailand following the earthquake on Friday afternoon.

Stillearly Posted March 28 Posted March 28 Some friends were in Bangkok ...on the 23rd floor , one said his ceiling collapsed and "water from the pool passed into his room" ... very scary ... they are still waiting outside for more aftershocks .. 1 3
bob lt Posted March 28 Posted March 28 There was a video clip of a hotel in Bangkok where the rooftop pool was discharging water over the side of the building. 1
Lemondropkid Posted March 28 Posted March 28 Hospital 10 minutes walk from my condo has had to be evacuated. Just saw it on Thai PBS. The poor patients, it's around 35 degrees out there today. Also heard from an evacuee that my local Bangkok Bank has aquired an external crack in the base of the building. Numerous reports of debris on major roads, including again Rama II going down to Hua Hin (where the crane collasped recently) a section of the road has now sunk there. Have seen several photos from Myanmar, looks terrible😟 Will wander out after 5 and see what the situations is like. 1 2
