john luke Posted June 3 Posted June 3 I am at Manchester airport awaiting my departure. I took a taxi from just outside Leeds to the airport at a cost of £94.70. The journey took two hours; peak traffic on M62 around Manchester. The driver would then have to drive back to Leeds before he could pick up any passengers. I would say it would take him at least 1 hour 15 minutes as traffic should be lighter. Veezu the taxi firm take between 20 and 30% of the fare as commission. For three and a quarter hours he would get around £75, for which he also has to provide a car and fuel etc. What do members think: is he underpaid, overpaid or is his remuneration just about right.
Lirchenfeld Posted June 3 Posted June 3 Compared to where I live he is underpaid. Taxidrivers usually have long waiting times where they just wait for clients at the taxi stands or driving empty back to the stand after dropping off a customer, thus earning nothing. All those hours without customers also counts towards a normal 35-40 hour full time job.
Zambo Posted June 3 Posted June 3 You've already calculated the drivers cut of the fare at GBP 75 Lets say a round trip of 100miles at 25mpg. That's 4 gallons of petrol at GBP 6 per gallon = GBP 24 for petrol. Now comes a guestimate of running his taxi - GBP260 per month. Assume 26 days working and count this trip as half a day = GBP 5 The driver has worked 3.25 hours for GBP 46 = GBP 14.15 per hour Uh.. what was the question?
KWA Posted June 4 Posted June 4 14 hours ago, Zambo said: GBP 14.15 per hour The UK National Living wage is £12.21 so this is almost 16% higher. Seems fair for the skill set required.
