There was a routine in the menu structure where you press a button 7 times which gave access to the facility to enable 3rd party apps. 

Afterwards it allowed me to download and save whatever I wanted.

I wonder of this update he is talking about just re enables the block 3rd party apps setting, but will allow you to go back in and enable it again. 

Also a bit odd that it wasn't an issue for the guy in the video after the same update.

Time will tell I guess.

Amazon will certainly kill the sale of firesticks if this becomes a thing methinks.

The seven times button gives you the developer option, but alot of pressure is being put on Amazon to supress third party availability in the future.

That's correct, once activated you can then allow 3rd party apps to be installed.
