Women's World Indoor Volleyball Championships here in Thailand....

Alright so wifey and I went to the Women’s Indoor Volleyball World Championships here in Bangkok. This is the “World Cup” for this event held every 2 years…2023 it was held in China, and this year Thailand hosted the event…and they have done a great job. 32 Countries qualified, games were played in Chiang Mai, Korat, Phuket and Bangkok. When it got to the round of 16, all games played at Hua Mak Bangkok where we went. Dinner at 5:30 pm here locally, then a 45 minute drive to get to the stadium. Small cameras only, no DSLR’S.

Seeing it live in person for the first time, I was in “awe” of how incredible this game is…it looks great on TV but…seeing it live and hearing the sounds of the game are second to none. The Thai team is good, they compete well, but clearly the teams from other countries have an advantage….certainly size wise. Thailand looked good in the round of 32, they beat Egypt, Sweden, and lost in 5 sets to The Netherlands. That set them up to meet Japan in the round of 16, where unfortunately they lost in 3 sets…25-20, 25-23 and 25-23…..they were right there, but made some mistakes that ultimately lead to the loss.

What surprised me the most was the “overall spectacle” of the event itself that you DO NOT see on TV. So that lead us to see the round of 8 that featured Italy vs Poland this past Wed evening 8 pm….2 games in the round of 8 that day…5 pm saw Japan vs Netherlands and Japan won in 5 sets…great game. Italy is a beast….good lord, there is a reason they are currently ranked #1 in the world. They beat Poland in 3 straight sets lead by this gal named “Paola Egonu” 6’4 inches (193 CM) My god, her “spikes” she throws up are legendary and is regarded as one of the best right now in all of the world. Feel sorry for the girls trying to defend against that when she gets the “set up” putting their hands and face right up there. I would be half way to Chonburi if I had to attempt to block her LOL! She is Nigerian, but was born in Italy and is quite popular…she is #18 and got a picture of her by herself.

At 7:30pm when each team comes out of the “tunnel” the lights go down, lasers are flying all over the place, blue/green lights are up,  the teams are introduced in both Thai and English, first comes Poland….they come jogging out of the tunnel and are playing “Shout At The Devil” by Motley Crue….this goes on for about 90 seconds, the girls are pumping their fist in the air, few girls are “flexing up” and a few ran over to the the first row of seats, jumped on top of them and started pumping their fist! Not to be outdone, Italy comes out next…..they come out to “Rock You Like A Hurricane” by The Scorpions! Holy Shit…I thought I was at “Donnington”

The lights go back up, and the warm ups begin…apparently there is some “bad blood” between these 2 teams….a bit of a dust up in warm ups, resulted in several of the players being  pulled away at the net, pointing fingers at each other…sat next to a Polish guy, had a nice looking Thai girl he was with…..tells me a few years back, the Polish team was being accused of spiking the ball intentionally against Italy, trying on purpose to hit one of the defenders??  Outstanding I say!

But Italy took them in 3 sets….great game and just did not realize, what great athletes these women are….some of the saves they make and the overall skill is just off the hook good. I surmise the women who are the defenders, have to put their hands in ice buckets after the match….they must take a beating!

Loud music, screaming fans and an overall great experience for sure.

Ok final 4 Saturday…….Japan vs Turkey and Italy vs Brazil…..I think the final on Sunday for the Gold will be Italy vs Turkey and Italy wins it all…..we’ll see…should be good.

Tickets were only 1.2k baht each….really reasonable, free parking and wifey..well..of course, she wanted Italy to win, don’t ask me why?….the Italy Bunny Ears and the Flag were only 30 baht total….the flags painted on her face were 100 baht…a deal overall. The 2 inflatable, rubber things you bang together were free from “EST Cola” but only for Thais?? If you were not Thai, then it was 50 baht?? WTF?  I talked to my attorney yesterday, we are going to file a lawsuit! LOL!

Cool...like I said, if you ever make it to Bangkok during the season, it is very impressive to see live, the stadium here is state of the art....I am really looking forward to the final 4 today.
