Bazle Posted September 27, 2025 Posted September 27, 2025 "From 27 September 2025, new rules on cash withdrawals will come into effect across UK banks. These changes have sparked concern among pensioners who rely on regular access to their savings for daily expenses. For years, many older people have preferred using cash instead of cards or mobile payments, but the updated withdrawal limits could affect how easily they can manage their finances. The government and banking regulators claim the new measures are designed to increase security, prevent fraud, and keep pace with the digital banking shift. However, critics argue that the changes may disproportionately affect older residents who are less comfortable with online and app-based banking systems." https://kaydeeproperties.com/uk-bank-withdrawal-limits-2025
Butch Posted September 27, 2025 Posted September 27, 2025 not sure if that's entirely true Baz. Nothing on Barclays news feed, and most of the claims regarding the above are from third party news sites. Barclays, anyone with premier banking can still withdraw up to £2k per day, non premier up to £500 per day which can be changed in the app. found this online as well " A review of statements from the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), the UK Government, and leading high-street banks reveals that no such law or universal banking policy has been announced. The FCA has not issued any directive mandating age-based withdrawal restrictions. Banks do impose withdrawal limits, but these are account-specific, vary by institution, and apply to all customers, not just pensioners. In fact, the Access to Cash Act 2023 was designed to safeguard continued access to physical money, especially in rural and underserved areas, highlighting a government stance in favour of protecting rather than restricting cash. Press releases and public statements from banks such as HSBC and Lloyds in 2025 have focused on fraud prevention campaigns and investments in digital banking. Still, no one mentions an age-related limit on cash withdrawals. The absence of such announcements from credible institutions strongly indicates that the claim is false." https://www.linkupwestdunbartonshire.org/uk-banks-new-withdrawal-limits/ 1 4
Horizondave Posted September 27, 2025 Posted September 27, 2025 (edited) Most banks already have a restriction on how much money you can take out on any one day. Nationwide (for me), is £500. I have always been aware that if I need more, I just have to go into the branch and speak with someone directly or make advance arrangements. The issue for me does relate to a change in the restrictions for somebody over 65 which I find astonishing. I know some pensioners could be vulnerable and they need to be protected, but I am sure that many of us could be affected. Does appear we may still be able to get our hands on higher amounts, more checks though on 'your' money. The story appears true as AI Google offers the following which actually highlights the amounts. ===== Starting September 2025, significant changes to ATM withdrawal limits and requirements will be implemented in the UK, including a £3,000 daily cap and specific rules for customers aged 65 and over. Key Changes to ATM Withdrawals Daily Withdrawal Cap: From September 1, 2025, all banks in the UK will enforce a £3,000 daily withdrawal limit per individual account. This applies to both ATM and in-branch transactions, aiming to enhance financial security and curb fraud. 1 Specific Rules for Seniors: Customers aged 65 and over will face a £500 daily withdrawal limit and a £2,000 weekly cap. Withdrawals exceeding these amounts may require additional checks, including proof of the purpose for the withdrawal. 1 ATM Transaction Limits: Some ATMs may limit withdrawals to £250 per transaction for seniors, even if their daily limit is higher. This is part of the effort to manage cash flow and prevent misuse. 1 Advance Notice for Large Withdrawals: For withdrawals above the weekly limit of £2,000, customers may need to provide 24 to 48 hours' notice to the bank and may be asked to show proof of the withdrawal's purpose. 2 Increased Access to Cash: In response to public demand and regulatory pressure, many banks are increasing their daily cash withdrawal limits, with some allowing up to £1,000 at ATMs. This change reflects a balance between convenience and security as the UK moves towards a more cashless society.
