Good that you didn't have to make another trip to retrieve your bank book. While the Thai banking system is far ahead of what we have in the US, it's still crazy they require a bank book to do pretty much anything with your account.

I was recently told that a friend went to k Bank in Big c extra and they wanted his passport to deposit money to an account. To withdraw money I can understand but to deposit money strange I guess but rules are rules

You have needed a passport to exchange money for some years now also.

Just money tracking to combat laundering I guess.

I've been able to exchange money using my Thailand Driver's License. I've also been able to check into Thailand hotels and Thailand domestic flights using a TDL in lieu of a passport. That may be because the TDL has the passport number listed.

I have 4 different accounts with 3 different Thai banks. Rarely have any issues with any of them, other than an a mobile glitch now and then (I just recharge or wait it out).

BKK tends to be a little more sensitive than K bank though.

Pocket dialing can sometimes lead to unwanted circumstances.

They are still catching up with the technology, hence the bankbook requirement. But, the bankbook is actually a good thing. Because it is kind of a backup when their tech systems go haywire (which they will).

My mate arrived in Thailand last week. He has a Bangkok Bank account, that he opened last year in a Hua Hin branch by paying a few thousand baht to open. He is a tourist and only travels twice a year. He stays in a condo for 2 months each time.

When he arrived at the airport, he went to the BB ATM to withdraw some of his money but the transaction was refused. He tried to withdraw money in Hua Hin at an ATM and again, was refused.

He went to the Bangkok Bank, where he opened the account, and they told him they had closed his account. They refunded him all his money and advised him that he wasn't able to have an account. He was obviously peeved, as he had paid the same bank last year, to open the account. They apologised and my mate was on his way.

He has a Wise card, if needing extra funds, which does work for withdrawing his money.

A bit of a shock to him but nothing he can do.

I think this will happen more and more unless on a long term visa

Ditto.

It should be of no surprise to anyone given the amount of publicity over the past year.

I am glad that so far Kasikorn haven't followed suit, although they now require updated info and a face scan.

It's not the time to bury your head in the sand in the hope these recent measures will go away methinks.

I now have a Wise card just in case Kasikorn have a purge.

I have Wise and Revolut, plus my U.K. cards ... the only problem is the Thai ATM fees would rack up

My Bangkok Bank worked okay last trip , I'm just hoping that it will continue to do so ... after upgrading my phone I can no longer log into the Bangkok Bank app ... if this stuff wasn't happening , it would be a quick trip to one of the branches and they would sort it out ... but I'm not putting my head above the parapet at the moment .. 555

I still have access to my account on my old Thai phone , so will carry on with that for now

🙏

I've had a BKK bank account in Korat for quite a few years now and on the last trip went to the branch to register my now (hopefully) permanent Thai mobile number.

Usually I arrive without a visa and top up my account via Wise or Xe.com before I leave the UK.

I've got a few bob in there I hope I don't have any problems.

Soon you will have a retirement extension,  so hopefully you can update your status and there won't be any further problems.

Given the current crack down, I think you are wise to not highlight your change of phone.

I have a Kasikorn bank account, and last August, I was using it no problem. Even went to the bank to check on another account, all was ok and didn't need to offer any documents or biometrics.

Appreciate, this is Thailand and anything can be different tomorrow.

I have accounts at BB, K and SCB that I opened 15 years ago. So far I've not been asked to come in and activate face scan. It might be because I have a low transfer limit of 50K. Some reports I read is if you want a higher limit you need to activate face scan.

I had a pop up window when logging into my KBIZ account telling me the date it needed to be done by to continue using the service.

I don't have the app on my phone, so that's probably different.

All I do know is that they all seem to be tightening up compared to previous years.

Hope you are keeping well mate.
