They went from 4-5 double checkouts to a grand total of one double check out...I could not believe it..

The quiche is a whopping 72 baht for one now.....Before, I was buying 4 for 180

Look at this, the bread cake is the same price, but they cheaped out and made it 30-40% smaller

What are the selling hours for wine, mate ??? Any good deals ??

Asking for a friend ......

I pretty much only buy wine from Friendship..

They have a pretty good selection of boxed wine, but most of it is not very good...I did find a brand called The Old Town 2L ,335 baht..

And the white is really quite good....I have been sticking with that one for about 9 months now..

Unfortunately I am not in Pattaya to visit Friendship. It is a one hour drive to Big C and Makro here and was fishing for some info ...

Halo in Makro was OK a year ago but haven't been since .. I have no other reason to drive there ...

Last time in Korat(May) Big C & Makro had pretty much the same wine selection(at the same prices) which wasn't very good but in the Mall there's a wine shop that had an excellent selection with some at very reasonable prices.

At least when I'm back in January I won't be caught out by the ridiculous afternoon embargo on booze sales.

Unless of course they change it again.

Even if they revert to the "10 litre" rule in the afternoon I'd be happy but would much prefer the wine deliveries that were banned during Covid to become legal again ....

They are expanding the food court so its bigger..

I'm glad that you pointed this out mate because it has prompted me to comment regarding stereotypical comments on social media about old men in Pattaya..

Apparently:

- We are perverts if we meet friends on Beach road.

- We are alcoholics if we meet friends in a bar.

- We are cheap charlies if we meet in supermarket food courts...!!!!

Where the f**k are people supposed to meet friends ??

The rest of the checkouts are in the middle of the store for some strange reason.

They've started doing that in Australia now.

It also means you get stopped on the way out and checked you have paid for your goods.

I must have completely missed the middle store checkouts....I thought I gave Big C a good walk-through...

Yes the checkouts in the middle of the store make no sense. You pay, then walk towards the exit, past lots of items for sale. If you want to buy something you have to queue at the checkout again!!

And at the very end it says

customer feedback was negative and led to a reversal of the decision.

So in a nutshell having a checkout in the middle of a store makes no sense and people don't like it....But I bet shoplifters love it...

None of the reasons for it sound very strong to me..

Grocery stores sometimes place checkouts in the middle of the store as a strategic decision to manage customer flow, increase impulse purchases, and optimize the use of store space.
Key reasons for this layout include:
  • Encouraging more shopping: Placing essential items like milk and eggs at the back of the store, and checkouts in the middle, forces customers to walk through more aisles. This increases their exposure to a wider variety of products and special offers, leading to more unplanned purchases.
  • Managing customer traffic: A central checkout area can help streamline queues and prevent congestion near the store exits, especially during busy periods. This layout can also make checkout queues more visible from different parts of the store, allowing staff to open more lanes when necessary to manage customer volume efficiently.
  • Boosting impulse buys: The checkout area is a prime location for impulse purchases. By creating a larger, more central area for checkout, stores can display a wider array of high-margin items (snacks, drinks, small household items) that shoppers are more likely to add to their carts while waiting, thus increasing overall sales.
  • Space optimization: Placing self-checkout kiosks in the middle of the store, for example, allows the retailer to fit more checkout points into a smaller overall footprint compared to traditional lanes at the front. The freed-up front space can then be used for more merchandise displays or interactive promotional areas.
  • Strategic experimentation: Some retailers, like Kmart in Australia, experimented with a central checkout format to see if it would improve the customer experience and operations, though in that case, customer feedback was negative and led to a reversal of the decision.

I like Makro. Just got back from there. They have a good meat section. I just had a butcher cut me a nice slab of Rump Roast for dinner tonight.

They also have a very good produce section.

It's like demo derby at the entrance though....

They F'd up everything in the Central Festival Topps as well.   Reconfigured it so now it's much harder to find shit you normally buy. Relocated the check out counters and put in a bunch of worthless self-check outs.

I am in big c X several times a week and It is quite common for the staff to put the items in the wrong place. Often right next to a price label for another product.

You need to compare the bar code on the item with that on the product. I have complained several times over the years but of course nothing is done about it
